Too Much Love Will Kill You

Chapter One: A City That Sleeps

Run, that's all I could do was run. I couldn't let the darkness get me, I must run faster. I pumped my legs as hard as I could, my feet painfully smacking the floor. I must reach the light. I looked down to see the black tendrils of darkness dancing under my feet tauntingly, daring to trip me and consume me. My eyes looked back up to the light, the tunnel stretching out endlessly. I must reach it. The sweet sounds of my mother's voice beckoned me, pleaded for me to reach her. It was just as sweet as I remember it.

The darkness hissed in frustration, wrapping an inky black tendril around my ankle prompting me to stumble and fall. I gasped in horror, soon an ocean of black washed over me and extinguished the light, my hope. His dark menacing voice whispered in my ears and angry tears flooded down my cheeks. I covered my eyes with my arm and tucked my legs up to my chest, praying he would leave me alone. Abruptly, unexpectedly, a sound pierced through darkness. It grew louder and louder. Stop the noise. My head pounded as it screamed in my ears, I groaned softly and lowered my arm only to be encompassed by bright light-

I woke up with a jolt. Jerkily I sat up clutching the sheets to my lap and looking around my room hazily. Sweat coated my back and dampened my hair, my golden curls sticking to the back of my neck. I rubbed my eyes wearily, moaning at the pressure behind them. The same damn dream, I really need to go see someone about this. I thought bitterly. A groan escaped my lips, it felt like my head was going to explode. The sound in my dream carried over into my waking hours. Instinctively and without hesitation I slapped the silver button of my blue alarm clock. The screaming silenced and the pounding in my head rolled to a stop. I scrubbed my hands over my face and bellowed an unladylike yawn into the darkness. Sleepily I rolled my gaze to my alarm clock and read the white numbers on its face. 8:45 am.

I slept in. Well thankfully it was Saturday and my only day-off this week. Stifling another yawn, I stumbled out of bed and into the kitchen. Lifting my arm, I pulled out a hair tie and tied back my chaotic lion's mane into a messy bun. A few of the curls came loose and fell around my face. I tucked them back behind my ears and traversed into my tiny kitchenette. Tentatively I pressed a toe on the tiled floor. I sighed in relief when no wave of coldness shot up my foot. Easily I maneuvered around my cream-colored kitchenette and primed my coffee machine that sat on the left side of my stove. The black plastic reflecting the light from atop the stove as it sputtered to life and produced the sweet black nectar into the pot. Groggily I pulled a mug from the cabinet and a vanilla creamer from my white dinky fridge and set it on the granite counter top. To pass the time on my brewing coffee I stepped into another short hallway to my left leading to my living room. I grabbed the remote off the small brown couch and turned on the tv. The screen fizzled and crackled to life. A white stat-icky screen appear on the glass surface instead of the usual random network. Great. Just perfect. I thought sourly.

With a sigh I shuffled around my couch and coffee table to the television set. I crouched-down in front of the square silver box, my ragged visage stared back at me with drained eyes. Ignoring my unapproachable appearance, I fiddled with the input buttons and to my surprise nothing changed. Huh. The television set was only a 2002 model and fairly-new, something can't be wrong with it. Looks like I'll have to call the cable company. I let another sigh escape my lips and turned off the tv before returning to kitchen.

The mouth-watering aroma of freshly brewed coffee drifted down the hallway. Happily, I shuffled over to the coffee pot and filled my mug. I poured very little creamer, preferring the strong bitter taste to be accompanied by the sweet little undertones of vanilla, not over powered. Contently I sipped on the hot brew, relishing in the bitter taste as it burned over my tongue and into my gullet. Lazily I sauntered back to my room and over to my nightstand. I plucked my tiny Samsung flip phone off the wooden surface and disconnected the charger. As the name suggests, with a flick of the wrist, I flipped the phone open. But I furrowed my brows when No Service lit up across the screen. Strange. I hope the landline works. Shrugging it off I set my phone back on the nightstand and strolled back into the kitchen.

The landline sat adjacent to the coffee machine and I lifted the beige colored phone to my ear. I dialed the cable company's number, an ominous low tone replying-back. The line is down. Alright this is getting weird. First mt cellphone, now my line? What the hell else could go wrong. Suddenly the floor shook, and the walls trembled as whistling screams soared over the apartment. Spoke too soon. I caught myself on the wall and coffee spilled all over the floor. I silently cursed and stumbled down the hall to living room. Almost tripping over my feet, I reached the window and pulled back the blinds. Down below in the normally busy and brash streets of Upper East Side Manhattan was littered with empty vehicles ranging from cars to mini vans, sixteen wheelers to buses. All empty and creepily quiet. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up and tingling darted up my legs. I pulled back from the blinds and set my coffee down on the coffee table. I could feel my heart pounding and a knot formed in my stomached. Again, almost tripping over myself, I ran into my room and picked up my phone. I dialed my friend Rosetta's number, but a dial tone greeted me. I tried Frankie's number, still only the dial tone. I ran through all the numbers of my friends, but only the same ominous dial tone replied-back.

In almost a hysterical panic, I pulled and tore off my sleepwear and shot over to my dresser. I rummaged through its contents and pulled out a simple beige bra, a grey long-sleeved shirt, and blue jeans with white socks. Hastily I slipped on my grey tennis-shoes then grabbed my keys, wallet, phone, and a black hoodie that laid on my desk chair before heading out into the hallway. I jogged over to the front door and pulled on my hoodie before existing. The hallway outside was completely empty and so quiet you could hear a pin drop. I was a bit surprised to see no one wandering the halls with the same startled-like curiosity. Someone has to be home. I thought hopefully. Turning around I locked my door and swiftly marched over to my neighbor's door, knocking. No answer. I knocked again. Still no answer. I went to every door on my floor and knocked, but no one answered. Okay this is getting really freaky. Am I in the twilight zone or something?

A shrieking whistle and crackling boom made the apartment complex shudder. I caught my myself on the wall and slapped my hands over my ears. An eruption of car alarms came from the streets below as distant rumblings quaked down the street. My head throbbed and my heart pounded wildly in my chest. What the hell is happening? Shakily I got to my feet and stumbled to the stairwell to the far right at the end of the hallway. The rumbling persisted and morphed into deep thudding, like footsteps. I paused mid-step down the stairs. Footsteps? What on God's green earth could make footsteps that heavy? Fear laced my heart and adrenaline filled my veins at my sudden frightening realization. "No... Not Here. Not in New York." I whispered.

I ran down the stairs from the third floor to the first floor. In my blind panic, I knocked over a potted plant, the ceramic clattering to the floor and the dirt flying across the white tile. The sound was deafening and halted me in my steps. "I need to calm down. In and out Allison. In and out." I leaned against the wall, breathing in through my nose and out through my mouth. Regaining my composure, I calmly walked past the mail room and down the hall that led to the gated front entrance. With all the courage I could muster I pulled the black metal handle down and stepped out into the nippy air of New York. Quietly I stepped out into the empty street and searched around for any sign of life. "Hello? Is anyone there?" I shouted. The silence and distant thudding welcomed me. Timidly I ambled back to the apartment and stayed on the sidewalk, away from the open street. I stood in the shadow of the apartment, gathering my thoughts and assessing my situation. I need to find a policeman or something. Truthfully anyone, I need to find out what's going on. With my mind made up, I started down the block and followed the sidewalk. I reached the end of the block and stood in front of the street light. The light was flashing yellow in a rhythmic beat, its eerie blinking eye following me. I looked to right and down the street at the next intersection, still more empty vehicles with no signs of life.

Uneasiness churned in my stomach at my exposed position. Probably standing out in the open isn't the brightest idea considering what I think is lurking out in the city. I shuffled back over to the wall facing the street light and leaned back against the brick surface. A sudden muffled sizzling popping sound echoed off the walls. The hell was that? Slowly I poked my head around the corner. Standing down the block to my horrified surprise was a black, white and purple robot. Its head searched amongst the automobiles, its red eyes looking for something. I didn't even hear it coming, how is this possible? It an angular pair of black wings jutting out from its back with a purple stripe running along the outer edge, a cockpit was nestled in the chest, the orange tinted glass gleaming in the morning sunlight, and a pair of jet thrusters for heels. A hauntingly sharp purple face adorned its wings, the insignia was terrifyingly familiar. Decepticon. Everyone knew of them, but rarely saw one. On the news they were portrayed as villainous monsters that wrought destruction and fought against their noble counterparts that fought for humanity, the Autobots. I didn't care much for the politics of it, but the idea they were living amongst us without us really knowing it freaked me the fuck out.

The robot seemed to be talking to itself chatting idly as it flipped over cars and peaked under trucks and vans. Great… It's a crazy Decepticon. As if hearing my thoughts, the thing lifted its head and looked down the block I was hiding behind. I squeaked and slammed myself against the wall, squeezing my eyes shut. Please don't let it have seen me, please don't let it have seen me. I chanted in my head. There was silence, horrible dreadful silence. The hairs all over my body stood up as a weird stat-icky feeling tingled its way from my head to my toes. The same sizzling popping sound echoed, but this time louder than before. I opened my eyes cautiously and looked over to my left. Giant ruby orbs stared back at me, the glass of its eyes showing my horrified reflection. A deep and raspy chuckle rippled from its mouth. Fuck me…

I bolted down the street and weaved between the abandoned vehicles, not daring to look back. I could feel my heart slamming against my rib-cage and a roaring in my ears. The robot cackled manically as I ran for my life. A hot ball of purple light crackled past me and into a blue sedan causing it to explode into a flaming piece of wrapped metal. Screaming, I kept running. I turned right and ran down through the street. My legs burned from the exertion, but the adrenaline kept me going. Everything hurt, my lungs burned and my head my pounding. I could see the large structure of The Metropolitan Museum of Art jutting out from the corner and slowed to a jog. I came to a stop when I reached the brown-white bricks of its massive walls, leaning against them catching my breath. "Okay I need to think of a plan…" I thought aloud, gulping for air. "The city is empty and there is no law enforcement or military. Probably all of the buildings are locked." I panted heavily. "Well…" I said aloud, "It seems like those things might be in the city, so maybe if I go to the park I'll be safer there." I tossed the plan around in my mind before deciding. I hope I'm right.

I pushed away from the wall and jogged down the side of the museum. A flurry of explosions threw me to the ground before I could reach the back-road. Overhead a tricolored jet of white, red, and blue came screaming across the sky, missiles raining down from underneath its wings. Explosions rocked the earth and a plume of fire and smoke erupted from the tree line a half-mile away. My ears rang painfully as more explosions shattered the silence crescendoing into a painful and deadly symphony. Grunting I pushed myself off the grass with my hands and carefully used the bricked wall of the museum to haul myself to my feet. From where I stood I could see balls of light raining up from the trees to the sky at the circling jet, each missing its intended target. The jet didn't stay for long and rocketed off in another direction back over me and the museum. Okay, time to go. Hesitantly I jogged to the back of the museum and across the road underneath a canopy of trees. There was another road that lead away from the museum and further into the forest, heading to Central Park. I jogged alongside it staying hidden under the stay of the trees.

Roaring engines crept up behind me and I spared a glance behind me. Four cars raced down the street, eating the distance between us. Flashes of red and yellow raced past me and flashes of blue and white followed. Were there people still here too? I watched them race further down the road and abruptly peel off to the right into another section of forest. "I guess we had the same idea." I murmured to myself. I jogged after them, following their tire tracks that led deeper into unknown woodlands. Coming up to the turn I could see a trail of a dirt road, their fresh tire tracks pressed into the dirt. The gravel road crunched under my shoes as I turned onto the maintenance path. The shadows of the canopy danced over my body as I ventured deeper. I could see their clouds of dust further up ahead growing smaller. "They could at least slow down a little…"

I felt a sudden familiar stat-icky tingling sensation followed by a sizzling pop. Before I could react, I was plucked off the ground by a giant purple hand. I screamed when the ground grew smaller and lifted above the trees. The purple digits squeeze around my rib-cage and heard a deep raspy cooing from behind me. It turned its hand and I was lifted above its cockpit to its white plated face. "Sad little fleshling, I won't hurt you" It clucked. "Well not much."

My body shook horribly, and I felt tears building up in my eyes. "Please!" I begged, "Let me go! Please!"

It laughed hysterically, as if it was told the funniest joke in the world. "Why would I do that? There's no fun in it!" I screamed as it rocketed off into the sky. I could feel the wind whipping in my face and my stomach dropped at the sudden elevation. The hair tie loosened its hold and my hair whipped around wildly. We broke through the clouds and breached the other-side, slowing down into a float. A twisted smirk tugged up its lips as it turned to look at me, sadistic mirth in its eyes. "You still want me to let you go?" I shook my head violently and it chuckled. "Now be a good little flesh sack and stay quiet." It cooed. We stayed floating above the clouds in silence until a crackling boom echoed below. A jet flew through the clouds right toward us, transforming into another robot might flight, rocketing itself closer to us. This robot was blue, white and, black and looked identical to the one holding me. Its ruby eyes spotted me, and it scowled. It looked up to its counterpart and sighed. "This is what you caught? A human?" It rumbled.

"What you don't like it 'Thunder? I thought we could use some leverage against those Auto-brats." It loosened its grip on me and I could feel myself slipping. "But if you don't want it we could watch it fall. I love it when they splattered, it's just so satisfying."

"Please don't! Please!" I screamed. I could feel my feet dangling in the air and I kicked at it helplessly. A sudden shrieking whistle screamed from somewhere I couldn't see, and the sound of metal clattering together announced its arrival. "You idiot! Don't drop her!" A hoarse voice shrieked.

"Aw 'Screamer you're no fun." The giant that held me grumbled. I was thrown into the air and caught once more into my captors' fist. I wanted to throw up, my head felt dizzy and my body felt numb. From the corner of my eye I could see a third robot floating close to the blue, white and, black one. It was the tricolored jet from before. I could feel its crimson eyes burning intensely into my side. "We have further use for her. Bring her to our glorious leader Megatron." It hissed.

I blinked away tears and swallowed the bile that threatened to come up. My captor sighed and followed its orders, plummeting down. My head whipped back, and I felt the wind tug at my hair as we plunged back down to the earth. The ground raced up to meet us and I closed my eyes shut, excepting my fate. Metal clattered and scarped against each other and something rose up behind me. My eyes fluttered open, I watched as orange glass swallowed me. I'm in the cockpit?! How the hell am I in the cockpit?! I held onto the seat for dear life as we continued to free fall. The nose of the jet angled up sharply before we could crash into the trees and I could hear what sounded like a war underneath us. My captor cackled, and I felt the jet jolt aggressively. Loud whistles of multiple objects falling rung painfully in my ears. Explosions erupted like a volcano beneath the jet and a wall of smoke mushroomed up and around the jet.

We breached out of the smoke, wispy trails clinging to the glass. A flurry of balls of light rained up from beneath and the jet rolled lazily. I desperately hugged the seat from the sudden change of momentum, a scream escaping my lips. The jet jerked forward and accelerated faster, I felt my back sink into the seat and I closed my eyes tightly. Metal scarping and rattling apart then together was my only warning before I was tossed into the air, flipping head over heels down to the earth. I shrieked, my throat beyond raw. This is it, I'm going to die! I tumbled through the air and felt time slow down, but my momentum was abruptly halted as I slammed into a purple plated palm. I wheezed and I coughed, groaning from the pain spreading across my chest and my back.

Its fingers curled around my torso and lifted me up. I opened my eyes and met more crimson orbs, but these ones were the color of blood. Its silver face was calm as it examined me. Megatron… I felt my blood freeze in my veins. I couldn't look away from its eyes, its cold unfeeling gaze turning my body to lead. The silver giant looked away and smirked, I turned my head to follow its gaze. The battle beyond paused, and more robots of all different shapes and colors stood a far distance away. One of them, however, stood out from the others. It was red, blue and, white and a white battle mask covered its lower face. "Optimus Prime…" I croaked.

"Well Prime it seems a human has wandered into my mists." It sneered. "Lay down your arms and I might be generous enough to release her into your custody." Megatron growled.

"You know I cannot do that Megatron." I could feel the Autobot leader's gaze on me. "Release the girl and leave this city."

"Skywarp." Megatron snarled. I felt the hand holding me squeeze tightly, my rib-cage crushing my lungs. I screamed and thrashed my head wildly. "If you do not lay down your arms and leave this city immediately she will be crushed into a pulp."

"Stop!" I pleaded. "Please!" The fist loosened its hold and I gulped for air.

"I will not tell you again Prime. If you do not leave she will be dropped. I'm sure you're familiar with what happens when humans fall from a high point."

Suddenly I was jolted up and lifted higher and higher into the air. "You bastard! Stop it!" I screeched. Skywarp laughed frenziedly and throttled me like a toy. The bile rose again and this time I couldn't hold it back.

"Stop Megatron! Release her!" Optimus barked.

"Leave Prime!"

I could see the Autobot leader look torn. Optimus glared at Megatron, his weapon aimed at the Decepticon leader. "You know I cannot do that."

Megatron chuckled. "You fool Prime." Blood stained eyes met mine. "Drop her."

Gravity rush to meet me. I tumbled down to my fate, the wind howling in my ears. Time slowed once more, and beloved memories flashed before my eyes. Closing my eyes, I waited for the earth to catch me, but it never came. A slick smooth surface glided underneath me, and the same grinding of metal met my ears. I opened my eyes to see nothing. I felt my body hit a soft surface and something wrap around my body and click into place. However, there was nothing there. I looked below, seeing grass flattened underneath me as I flew forward. I was levitating above the ground. My head whipped up and I screamed, a forest of legs coming up to meet me. But instead I was swerving around them. Splashes of dirt hit an invisible surface, showering half a foot above me. My mind was reeling, fumbling to come with an expiation. "Sit tight." A voice rumbled from all around me. "I'm getting you out of here."

The interior of a car bled out all around me and the car dived into the tree line. I held onto the seat as it skidded and swerved away from tree tucks and raining laser fire. I couldn't take this anymore. Black dots appeared in my vision and my body went numb. I looked up to the ceiling of the car and my heavy lids closed shut, the familiar darkness taking me into slumber.
