The walk to the top of the grassy hill seemed to take forever. Sweat dripped from his brow, though not from exhaustion or heat. In fact the day was overcast and there was a constant breeze in the air, thunder sounded every now and again signaling the impending storm. All in all he thought, the weather suited the mood of the day. He looked up, now able to see the two gigantic stones placed at the top of the hill. His heart threatened to burst from his chest, just like it had every time he saw those two stones.
The last leg of the journey to the top of the hill seemed to take them forever, their legs felt weak and their hearts heavy. To this day they did not know what had caused the explosion in the lab, he had been so careful with his experiments since the girls had come to live with them, it had been years since the last big accident.
"My friend" he said, addressing the first stone after finally reaching the top of the hill. "You were gone to soon. I will never forget your help and dedication me, I would never be where I am today without you." He wiped away a tear that was threatening to drop from his nose and turned to the second stone.
As he turned towards the next stone, a great lump rising in his throat. "To my leetle kitteen" He stopped, choking on his words, the tears now flowing freely from his eyes. He looked down at his two daughters; both had grown a lot in the three years he had known them. The pain of the incident only a year ago was still heavy on their hearts.
"To my leetle kitteen." He started again, "Your life was cut to short, we will never forget your laughter and de pleasure you took een life. My only regret ees dat I deed not find you tree sooner." He leaned forward, kissing the stone.
He turned, unable to say more. There would be more days like this to come, more grieving to deal with, and many more words to say. He started back down the hill with his two daughters, running his hand through his eldest's ponytail and patting the pink cap that his second child never removed. It was starting to rain, however he couldn't resist looking back. Behind them on the hill, masked now by the heavy down pour, stood a solid gold replica of a beaker, and a gigantic diamond encrusted marble unicorn.
