Neither one of them had apologized. Neither one of them would. She would continue to risk her life for her precious Doctor. Rose Tyler would continue to help Torchwood build their dimension cannon. Loki would continue to think it a stupid act of Midgardian arrogance: to think a mere human could create a device to jump through space and time. That was a task only achievable by Gods. And apparently Time Lords . . .
Hours after the fight, she breaks the silence. "I've seen the end of the world."
At first, he thinks she's heard the sound of the Gjallarhorn. Loki thinks she's seen him at what will be his worst, bringing Hel's own to battle the greatest of Asgard. He thinks she's seen his bro-, seen Thor defeat Jormungandr, only to take his final nine steps. He thinks she's seen his own death at the hands of Heimdallr. The Trickster looks away from her in shame.
She knows that he isn't immortal. Loki knows what she will say: not everyone knows when they will die. She will say that she could lose her life at anytime; that death is a part of someone's fate. Rose Tyler will bring up that nothing good comes from trying to change that fate, though her father now lives in this new dimension. She will think her argument is valid. She will think it will give her reason to risk the cannon because it might be her fate to die for her Doctor. Loki will want to argue that just because all the gods know their fate, doesn't mean they will seek their killers out. But he won't, for once he will keep quiet because he cannot rule her thoughts. For in the end, Rose Tyler is not and will never be his.
But then she talks of Midgard beings consumed in fire and Loki breaths. She has not seen the end of this world. Rose Tyler has not witnessed Ragnarok. She has not seen what will bring him the greatest shame. He is safe in his knowledge that her world does not burn brighter than the sun; it drowns.
He is safe, but not comforted. Rose Tyler has not seen him at his worse. She cannot contemplate the evils he will do. Yet, he still is not good enough for her. He will never be good enough for her. He is not the Doctor. He is not a healer. He is a Trickster, a destroyer of worlds. He should hate everything that Rose Tyler stands for but he doesn't.
Rose finishes her story, reveling in how the Doctor saved her. She pleads with Loki to understand. It's her turn to save him; she has to at least try. Loki shakes his head. At the end of the world, Rose Tyler knows whom she will stand for. Loki knows too. But he wonders whom he will think of in the end. And Loki's afraid that when he watches as Fenrir swallows the all-father, he will be thinking of a different Bad Wolf entirely.
