Our farewell.
He knew she didn't have long left. She was getting weaker by the day, and had now got to the point where she was fully dependant on all those around her.Now it was only a matter of time.
She'd been fighting this disease for only a short while, but he daren't mention it's name. Right from the start it had taken a hold on them both, talking over their lives completely. Yet she'd been so brave, taking everything in it's stride. But now there was nothing left to do, it was to advanced for even Mr Rose to tackle. She could barely talk, but she didn't need to. Her eyes told the story.
They'd fought it together. He'd been to every hospital appointment with her, staying up with her through the long hard nights when she'd not been well. Many times he'd stayed with her when she had to be admitted to hospital, holding her hand through it all, waiting, wishing and praying for an end to it all, one way or another.
The room was deadly silent. The only other person in there was Mike Banner, who had nursed her right from the beginning. He'd been fantastic, so patient with her, taking things at her pace. Now it was only a matter of hours. Everyone else was getting on with their work, waiting anxiously for news.
He desperately wanted it to be over, and for her suffering to come to an end. It wasn't fair. Even she knew it was only a matter of time. She smiled weakly."I'm so lucky to have loved you Gordon" She said, looking up at him."Likewise" He said, laughing. His smile lighting up the room, but now tears were slowly forming in his eyes. He wished he could do something, make it all better, but he was powerless. There was very little he or anyone else could do now."And Jonathon" She whispered."Make sure he knows that his mummy loves him, and you very much". She too was holding back the tears, closing her eyes momentarily. He could tell that she was frightened, but he daren't say anything."Yes of course. I promise" Gordon replied, holding her hand tighter than ever before. He was lost for words. Simply didn't know what to say. Her eyes closed once more, and she took one last breath. Mike walked over, and checked for a pulse. Nothing. He checked again, frantically trying. Still nothing. The tears began to well up in his eyes as he turned to face Gordon. "I'm so sorry Gordon. She's gone"...
