Chapter 1: Discovery

Ruby's P.O.V

Lightning flashed next to me. The smell of burning hair reached my nose. It must have singed my hair which meant it was close, to close. The rain and wind whipped my face, scraping my cheeks like daggers.

Exhausted I called out to my brother, "Kanu! This storm is too strong we need to land and wait it out."

"No we can't. We can't risk them catching up with us. We'll make it." Kanu responded with a growl.

I looked over my brother's large, scaly shoulder. The ocean raged below us, the waves threatening to knock us out of the sky, and still, no land in sight. Kanu's long body cut through the air as if it was water, dodging the flashing bolts of electricity. Suddenly there was a loud crash and my brother let out a shriek. The air filled with the smell of burning flesh.

My brother's wing was smoldering, a large burn mark etched into the scales. Then we were falling.

Hiccup's P.O.V

This place we live in is called Berk. It snows nine months of the year and hails the other three. Any food that grows here is tough and tasteless, the people who grow here are even more so. The only upside are the pets. While other places have ponies or parrots, we have….. dragons.

It has been five years since my battle with the Red Death at Dragon Island. It's hard to believe centuries of killing and hatred turned into friendship within a couple of weeks. I would have never been able to survive without the help of my friends, especially Toothless. He's saved my life more times than I count now. In these past years Berk has thrived like never before. With dragons and humans working together, no other villages dare to challenge our might. Life has been peaceful, for the most part. Some people took longer to adjust then others, but now we wouldn't have it any other way.

This morning started out like any regular morning. Toothless ruthlessly woke me up by pouncing on my chest, so we could start our early morning flight. Oh, did I mention that Toothless is a 350 pound, sleek, black, scale covered, Dragon!?

"Five more minutes." Toothless responded with a whine and a nice big, slimy tongue to my face.

"Alright, alright I'm coming. It'd be nice to be not woken up covered in dragon slobber every once in a while." I grabbed my gear off my desk.

Running down stairs with Toothless on my tail, I said a quick "Good morning" to my father, Stoik the Vast.

"Hiccup! Good to see your finally out of bed!"

"Ah hey dad! Don't mind me. Just going to let toothless out of a bit."

Stoik was looking over something while chewing on a freshly cooked sheep leg. He looked up at me with a huge grin on his face.

"I see. Don't forget we need to discuss the festival activities for the dragon race coming up soon. Oh and we are going to need you at the council meeting tonight. The storm last night apparently flooded the docks and sank two boats. The owners are going to need to them repaired."

I began to sneak closer to the door with Toothless while my dad rambled on.

"Right! Of course, dad. Can't wait. I'll see you then so I'll just be going."

"Hiccup you're going to have to get more involved if your…"

I didn't hear the rest because I had already snuck out the door. I hopped on Toothless, swinging my crippled leg over his back and hooked my metal foot into its freshly made stirrup. Within seconds we were soaring into the magnificent blue sky.

Flying in the morning is probably the second-best time to fly, the first being at sunset. The morning air smelt like salt and pine. The wind whipped my hair back as we glided through the air. Flying is the best. I feel confident and alive when I fly with Toothless.

Toothless looked over his shoulder giving me a giddy grin. I smiled back and nodded, giving him the "go" sign. He made sharp dive towards the earth. We flew low over the forest dodging trees as we went, then pulling up sharply to reveal the most breathtaking view of the sunrise over the ocean.

A monstrous roar shook the trees down below us. I whipped my head around to see numerous fallen trees in the middle of the forest.

"Toothless! Land."

We landed with a soft thud and I cautiously, hopped off Toothless to get a better look. Trees had been leveled, clearing a zagged path to where I stood. Scratch marks scarred trees. Something big crashed through here.

"What could have caused all this?" I reached down touching the wounded earth.

Suddenly, the sound of rustling leaving and a low rumbling arose from the bushes near me. I leaped back, Toothless stepped in front of me protectively giving out a warning growl.

"Show yourself!" I called out getting into a defensive position.

Out from behind the bushes poked a dragon's head; it was nothing like I had ever seen before. The dragon's head was a brilliant light blue, with long, wispy horns that stuck out at the top of his head. His eyes were mostly black with a shimmering blue circle lining the outside. The dragon gave out a low guttural sound from the back of its throat and stepped a little farther out of the brush revealing itself. The dragon had a long thick body covered in shiny blue scales and long line of a hair-like fur that ran down the length of its entire body. But what caught my eye was blood dripping from the large burn that stretched across it's wing. It was a red stain across the dragon's long blue body.

Toothless took a step toward it giving out a warning tone against a possible attack.

"Wo wo wo, calm down buddy." I said stepping in front of Toothless.

"It's injured."

The dragon's eyes fell on Toothless and with an almost pleading look, it let out a shriek. Toothless's eyes widened and he responded with a low roar of his own. Then suddenly the other dragon turned and began to walk in the opposite direction. Toothless turned to me and motioned with his head for me to follow.

"Hey where are we going?" I called after them a little confused. "You guys want to fill me in on this little conversation you just had?"

Toothless rolled his eyes and huffed at me, so I followed the two in silence.

We walked for a short while until we came to a large cave cut in the side of the mountain at the edge of the forest. It was a well-known dragon's den.

"Anybody want to tell me why I'm standing in front of the Terrible Terror's nest?"

I looked at the two dragons expecting an answer. The blue dragon huffed at me and nudged me into the cave. I didn't have to walk far to find a very strange sight indeed, and in Berk that's saying something!

Lying in the middle of the cave was what looked like, a huge clump of squirming, baby Terrible Terrors. The blue dragon approached the pile and nosed the babies aside to reveal his real reason for concern. In the middle of the pile, lay a girl with red, fire-like hair dressed in what looked like armor. Blue and black war paint obscured the rest of her features from me.

The Terrors created a path for me as I knelt before the unconscious girl. I studied her closely, despite having an unnatural red hair color this girl looked like a normal human to me. Scrapes and bruises littered her face and arms. I put a hand to her neck, she had a steady pulse but she was hot to the touch. The Terrors must have been keeping her warm. I couldn't help but think the dragons were acting oddly protective but I shook off the thought, I needed to get her back to the village. I swept her up and steadying my grip, I walked swiftly out of the cave.

"Toothless we need to bring her back to the village. She's injured and has a fever."

I said laid the unconscious girl over Toothless's back. The blue dragon let out a protective whine.

"Don't worry."

The blue dragon lowered his nose to me and I gave it a reassuring pat on the nose.

"She'll be alright. We'll make sure she gets better."

The blue dragon blinked at me so I took that as he understood but as I began to hop on toothless's back it began to follow me.

"Hold on big guy! You can't come with me. You're in no condition to fly."

The dragon let out a low growl. I could tell he didn't want to leave the sick girl alone. Toothless turned to the blue dragon making a serious of gurgling and yipping noises. The blue dragon looked hesitant.

"I promise we will be back for you as soon as I can. No harm will come to your friend while she is on this island."

Reluctantly, the blue dragon slowly sat down, wing out stretched signaling that it would listen. With the girl safely secured, Toothless and I hurriedly took off back towards Berk.

The whole way back I mulled over what could have possibly caused all the Terrors to surround her like that. It was as if they were protecting her, trying to keep her alive, and not to mention the blue dragon that found us. Was she its rider? There was no trace of a saddle. Did this mean there were other villages that have learned to ride dragons? Most importantly where did this girl come from?
