"Well, I just wanted to apologize. I…um…you deserve an apology." She was babbling the same thing over and over. "I couldn't protect you. And I tried! I really did, but I had to protect the others, you know." Toph reached out her hand hesitantly but then dropped it to her side. "And then… Aang. It was all my fault." She sighed. He wasn't saying anything, but she could feel him listening. "I'm sorry, Appa."

The bison grumbled in approval before giving the small girl a giant lick with his enormous tongue.

"See? Told you he'd forgive you!" Aang exclaimed happily. "Appa doesn't hold grudges! Besides, he loves you!"

Toph glared at him and the giggling Water Tribe siblings with her pale eyes as saliva dripped off of her clothes and hair.

"I'm…glad." She replied through clenched teeth.
