"All this time I was finding myself and I didn't know I was lost."
- Avicci, Wake Me Up
There were few things Lara believed in. At the moment, however, she only believed in one thing; the eyes are the windows to the soul.
As she watched Mathias plummet to his grave she turned with weapons ready to save Sam but when she turned she saw her friend motionless on the ground. Seconds seemed like hours as she ran toward her fallen friend.
"Sam!" Lara cried as she clung to Sam's body, like she did Roth's just days before, "I can't lose you too."
But she was too late. Tears began to well up in Lara's eye but none fell. She had cried far too much in the past few days to shed any more now. She had failed to save her friend and she would never be able to tell her…
"What's wrong, Sweetie?" Sam's raspy voice washed over Lara like a second wind. This time Lara did cry, not from sadness, but from joy as she pulled Sam into a fierce hug, "You're alive!"
"Yes," Sam sighed almost in relief, "I am."
That was when Lara finally noticed it. Something wasn't right. The air around them seemed to have gone still as the temperature continued to drop. With a quick glance at the alter Lara looked back and realized the horrible truth.
The ritual worked.
Sam's eyes once pools of cool blue were as dark as the islands storms.
"No!" Lara cried as she dropped Sam as if were burnt, "I made a promise!"
Lara watched as Sam's mouth stretched into a smile, one entirely too fake, as she walked toward her. Before she knew it everything went black. The last thing she remembered were those dark, soulless eyes.
Lara's eyes snapped open and she sprung up in a silent scream. It was that dream again. It had been weeks since they had gotten off that island but the dream still haunted her.
A tired moan came from beside her as arms gently wrapped around her still healing stomach, "The dream?"
Lara leaned into Sam's warmth and hummed in confirmation. Silence stretch as Sam continued to hold Lara.
"What if I was too late?" Lara finally broke the silence with the questions that had been haunting her for weeks, "What if I had lost you too?"
Sam slowly untangled herself from Lara and sat up, never truly letting her go. With one arm securely wrapped around Lara she took the other and silently ran it up and along the scars on Lara's arm and chest, lingering on a deep one near her collarbone. With softness she only reserved for Lara she lifted up Lara's chin and looked her in the eyes, "But you didn't."
"I-" Lara locked eyes with Sam and exchanged more than words could ever communicate. With a sigh Lara finally gave a tired smile, "Thank you."
"No," Sam began as she looked at her, her eyes a dancing like the ocean, "thank you."
Lara once again leaned into Sam and smiled. As yawns escaped their lips they settled back down and Sam smiled as Lara curled into her side
"I love you," Lara whispered as she curled into Sam's side. Sam's heart swelled with joy as she bent down and kissed the top of Lara's head, "I love you too."
A/N 2: Short and sweet, eh? I tried not to make them too OOC. Thanks for reading!
