The door closed and, just like that, she's alone.
Before she knows what she's doing her knees are up to her chest and salty water is running down her cheeks.
"What now, dad?" she whispers, but no-one answers, her father is gone.
I want to start by letting you know this
Because of you, my life has a purpose
It helped me be who I am today,
I see myself in every word you say.
She pulls her knees closer to her chest and buries her face into them. No-one comes to speak to her, or console her or offer several multicoloured handkerchiefs from one of their sleeves.
A watery giggle escapes her at the memory, but it is quickly swallowed by her sadness, and the silence of the new room.
"Come back, daddy," she whispers, "Please come back."
She doesn't hear the door slide open until a voice speaks; "Maybe one day."
She looks up at Robin, standing in the doorway, his lips pressed together in a sympathetic line. When she doesn't reply Robin shrugs.
"You're one of the lucky ones. Maybe one day he will come back."
Sometimes it feels like nobody gets me,
Trapped in a world where everyone hates me,
There's so much that I'm going through,
I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for you.
She loses it and stands; the only thing stopping her from turning the boy in front of her into his namesake is the lingering threat of Batman's fury, so she settled for glaring.
"What the hell do you know?" she shouts, "I've just lost my father, and you probably know that my mom's already dead, so-"
"And at least you didn't lose them all at once." Robin snaps, "Don't say I don't get what you're going through, because I do. My whole family died at the same time; mom, dad, aunt, cousin. My uncle got taken off life support three months ago, he's been comatose since that same accident that killed everyone else, so don't you dare start with the whole 'you don't know how I feel' bravado."
I was broken, I was choking,
I was lost; this song saved my life.
I was bleeding, stopped believing,
Could have died, this song saved my life.
She stumbles backwards and collapses on the bed, suddenly unable to breathe.
"I'm sorry, I-" she stumbles over her words and takes a deep breath; "I didn't know."
Robin adjusts his glasses and sighs, "Nobody knows, that's why you're not going to tell them, I don't need their sympathy."
She nods mutely, not really listening, "Does it-" it's suddenly very difficult to breathe, "Does it ever stop, y'know,"
"Hurting?" he asks, the look on his face tells her all she needs to know.
Fresh tears roll down her face and slowly, almost tentatively, her envelopes her in a hug.
They stay there until her tears run out.
I was down,
I was drowning,
But it came on just in time.
This song saved my life.
