The Final Day
A short story based on The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
Written by Ethan Latimer Kane
If you are reading this journal, I have long since passed away. My life has vanished, and my memory will all too soon do the same. I have lived my time here, and now it is time for me to say goodbye to the world and all of its inhabitants. The very moon that we looked upon for our entire lives is inevitably going to fall to the earth, and all those who have not taken shelter will all lose their lives today.
As I am hiding here in this room, I can feel the earth tremble as the moon draws nearer, and the feeling of utter helplessness abounds the room. The children around me are crying in fear, begging for their mothers to save them from this terror, but all that their mothers can do is cry with them, and try to assure them even through their tears that everything will be alright. The men are holding their wives and children close to them, trying to remain strong so that they won't let their families know that they too are terrified. The animals in the room are all shaking and whining, looking around the room and trying to find a way out to run for their lives.
Every minute in this room seems like an eternity, and as the candles one by one flicker out, the only light in the room is coming from the glare of the moon through the window. Every earthquake is getting worse, shaking the very foundation of the room. The children scream when each quake rocks the room, shaking not only the buildings around us, but our very hearts and minds. Please know that we did not do anything to deserve this. We lived our lives the best way we could. Everything that we did, we did for the betterment of our neighbors and our friends and families.
I wish there was someone out there who could save us from this nightmare. I wish I could stop this horrible thing from happening, but there is no hope for that. We're stuck here in this crowded room, just awaiting our death. The earthquakes are getting more and more violent, and the cries of the men, women, and children are almost deafening.
Several minutes pass, and I look out the window and see the moon coming ever closer to the earth. The clock tower bell rings more frequently with every minute that passes by. The screams in the room have now silenced, and there are only the hushed whimpering of the people and animals in the room as they are now saying their final prayers and goodbyes, hoping that they don't leave this world without having some reason for even being there in the first place.
I just…I just heard a scream. I just heard a blood curdling scream. The children are screaming and crying now…their tears…their tears could almost fill the room… I…I can't believe this is happening… This quake was the worst. The moon…it's coming closer…and closer…I'm afraid I don't have much time…The screams….the blasted screams! I can't even think...someone save us…please…someone…
The moon is just over our heads now…it won't be long until I'm gone…That scream…I heard it again…now there's laughing…maniacal…evil laughing… The tower is falling…
The moon…dear gods, the moon…
Gods, someone, anyone…please save us!
GODS PLEASE SAVE US!
The heat…it's burning…
I can't breathe…
Someone….anyone….please….
Save me…..
…
