Disclaimer: I do not own Gilmore Girls

Also this is my first story/fanfic in several years, so I hope you enjoy.

He'd just heard the news. The originated date had been marked, but there'd been too many deadlines and he just didn't have the time to leave his spot in Philadelphia. Liz had said she understood, but he knew she was sad. In the past couple years, since her marriage to T.J. they'd grown closer. While he had wanted to be there for the birth of his new sister, it just wasn't possible at this time.

Jess sighed as he looked at the screen before him, Luke had just called. Doula was a healthy little girl. Certainly he could do something, but he couldn't leave, not yet. The guys were relying on him. A grin crossed his lips. Years ago, if he'd been told he'd be a reliable citizen, he'd had laughed and told the person they were crazy. Gone were the days where he shook off responsibility, gone were the days he didn't care. These days he cared too much.

With a smile and a sigh, an odd sort of combination, he began to type.

Once there was a young maiden, she knew not of what she wanted to do. With a boy at her side, a jester of sorts, she traveled the land. She met many different folk, but never the right folk. While one was a gambler, the other a thief. Her boy grew angry and she sent him away. While sure he was worth less than a penny, he went to family far away. There he found strength and nobility. He learned the art of hard work and what it meant to love and what it meant to be loved. After a great amount of time he left this land and found new land where he became their scholar. He taught and learned and in time became happier than he'd ever been. The young boy, no nearly a man, thought he couldn't be happier until a messenger brought him news; there was a new lady in the land he came from. She was young and beautiful and needed a knight. He was no knight, but he could try. So he took up arms, saddled a horse and made out on his merry way.

He found the new young maiden with ease, as she was the prettiest in the land. There was no one who compared to her. With ease they became fast friends and he knew he would do anything for her.

One day he vowed to protect her with his life. She was a princess to him and he a lowly scholar turned knight. He never let her out of this sight and until the last of his days, protected her, because no one deserved more protection and love than her.

Jess read over what he had wrote, not all too sure about it, but still satisfied. He hoped Doula, once she was old enough to understand, would enjoy the story. He'd get his buddy to illustrate and of course take a vow of silence. He wasn't a children's writer, but for this littler girl whom he hoped had a better childhood than him, he was.

The young writer smiled as he leaned back in his chair and took a drink, he had a sister. He knew Liz had been trying to change her life and he remembered hating this guy, but things seemed to be working out. He'd be lying if he said he wasn't a little jealous, but he was happy. In fact she'd even tried to keep in contact with him, he hoped to do the same, and especially with knowing he had someone knew in his life. He wanted things to be different. Jess was ready for different.
