Watching the Durarara dubbed version, which finally inspired me enough to type up this story which has been sitting around in my head for months.
Oh yes, I almost forgot. I own nothing.
Mikado ran out of the classroom after shoving everything neatly into his backpack. He had already given his excuse to Anri, who had smiled passively and nodded, agreeing to pass on his excuse to Kida. He couldn't walk with them today, and he didn't have time to deal with Kida's inevitable innuendos about why he was skipping their daily after-school walk.
No, he was not going on a date. No, he was not banging some girl behind Kida's back. No, Kida, it has nothing do to anything with a girl. He laughed fondly. Kida could be completely ridiculous sometimes. Although that was part of the reason why he liked Kida so much.
All he had to do was go to the grocery store and pick up food for the week. He hadn't had time over the weekend, and he had to go while the all the various things he needed was still on sale. He also had to get there before all the housewives completely wiped out the store. Man, those housewives could be vicious. He'd seen some of them get into almost all-out brawls.
He gave an involuntary shiver, and turned the corner, slowing down from his run (or as much of a run as it could be called. He really wasn't that athletically inclined) to a walk. He saw the grocery store and tried to get his pants back under control before he entered.
After he had grabbed everything he needed, he turned towards the check-out line. As he waited, he did notice that each person that finished their purchase looked pretty relieved to finally pick up their bag and get out of the doors. But he could understand that feeling. There was nothing very interesting about grocery shopping. He finally reached the head of the line and waited as whoever it was rang up all his items.
"$48.76"
Mikado counted the appropriate number of bills out and handed them over the cashier. As the man –for that's what the cashier was, although Mikado hadn't known until he had heard the voice- turned to get the change, Mikado looked at him. The man had all but grunted out the amount he owed, not even bothering with the polite language that all employees who worked with costumers used.
"50 dollars were paid. 1 A dollar and 24 are your change," The man put the change on the counter, being relatively gentle with the money, although his eyes had a bored, vaguely annoyed look that didn't encourage anyone to approach him.
"Thanks," Mikado said clearly as he grabbed his change and dropped it into the bag of groceries that some other employee had packed for him.
"Come again," the man grunted after him, almost as an afterthought.
When he got home, Mikado promptly put everything away before getting his homework out and working assiduously. The man from the grocery store, while unusual, was not enough to keep Mikado's attention. After all, there were plenty of people who worked in grocery stores or convenience stores and were relatively rude. Mikado promptly forgot him, as he got engrossed in trying to solve a particularly difficult math problem. Damn geometry.
A/N: There is a high likelihood my A/N will be all over the place.
So that was the first chapter. It's pretty short, but pretty much to get me in the swing of things. I passed on my hatred of geometry to Mikado right at the end.
I've been wanting to write a story with this pairing for quite a while, especially when I noticed there weren't many.
