I was just a kid. After Jeb took those kids with the bird wings, I was the scientist's main focus. As far as I know, I'm the only person to have bat wings. When Jeb came back, the other scientists knew he'd hidden those kids away. I was around eleven when he came back. They trained me, using the Erasers. After that, they sent me out to find the Flock and follow them. How did the Erasers find them? I found them first and reported back to the School. I didn't want to, but they told me that if I got the Flock for them, they would let me go. All I wanted was to fly, to be free. Not live in some tiny cage. I'm not completely human, but enough of me is. I hate being stuck in cages as much as the next guy, so, of course, I'd do anything to get out. And that's where my story begins.

"Avery. Come in, Avery," the walkie-talkie buzzed. I rolled over and grabbed it, groaning. If I'm not up by nine every morning, they wake me up.

"What?" I mumble.

"Have you found the subjects yet?"

"No."

"We need you to track them. Find them."

"I'm on it. Just give me time."

"That's one thing we don't have. Get busy. We'll be in touch." The other end went quiet and I turned it off, laying back on tree branch. I actually had found the "subjects" as the wack-a-doo scientists at the School called them. I just didn't really want to turn them in. I looked down the mountain at their letter E shaped house. How could I condemn them like that? But it was for my own survival. I sighed.Fine then. I sat there. It was quiet. Birds chirped, I heard the sound of a television from inside their house. Two little blonde kids came out and started throwing a ball back and forth. I picked up the walkie-talkie and stared at it. I'll call them later.

After a few hours, I decided to go into town and have a bite to eat. When I fly, it's not so much like how the bird-kids fly. I more swim through the air. Their feathers hold them up more. It has something to do with surface area and the build of their feathers, but my wings, being just flesh, make it to where I have to work a bit more.
