INTRODUCTION
This treatise and lecture field, per official standards of Ba Sing Se University – Anthropology Department shall be divided into appropriate sections dealing specifically with the various and specific cultural groups existing within the world at the time of the birth of Avatar Aang – a date conventionally set at twelve years prior to the arrival of Sozin's Comet[1], or 12 BSC. The descriptions shall thus describe the history of the various cultural groups occurring after the conclusion of the Great World War, a date listed at exactly 100 ASC[2], roughly corresponding relative to the coronation of Fire Lord Zuko the Benevolent. Such a specific notation shall permit and encourage the understanding of the rough, tumultuous history that led to the creation of the United Republic as it stands today, and the current geopolitical situation of the world, post-war.

The date of conclusion in the Fire Colonies is considered controversial in itself due to the various series of uprisings, disturbances, conflicts, skirmishes, raids, and riots that occurred directly after the war as a result of the conflict between the Militia of the Fire Colonies - a force in support of former Fire Lord Ozai the Terrible's return to power and a supporter of Fire Nation nationalism in the region, the Firebenders' United Action Front - who supported the full assimilation of the Fire Colonies as states in the United Republic, the Earth Kingdom Nationalist Brigade - who supported Earth Kingdom nationalism, a restoration of power and lands owned by the Fire Nation colonists, their deportation, and the removal of the aforementioned colonies, the Royal Army of the Commonwealth of the Fire Nation, and the Republican Corps of the United Republic. These periods of conflict, known together euphemistically as "The Struggles", are touched upon in greater detail in Sections II, IV, V, and VI.
