The rain tapped its cold, dreary fingers against the window. An elderly woman was laying back on a hospital bed, the heart monitor next to her making slow steady beeps. She knew her time was coming to an end very soon. She sighed and clasped her hands together softly as they rested over her lap. I wonder what he's up to these days, she thought to herself. Even in her old age, she still didn't forget a special promise she made with a young boy, who even on her death bed, she still dreams about.
The old woman closed her eyes and took in a deep breath. Tired, she rested her head against the pillow and waited for the inevitable. Minutes past by before a strong gust of wind hit against the window, causing the glass to shake a bit. The sudden noise made the old woman's eyes open. In front of the window stood a figure about the size of a young teenager. She blinked a few times so her eyesight could adjust. The figure walked towards her calmly. When the old woman's eyesight was focused, she smiled calmly at the now focused figure standing before her. A young boy with a familiar green bob haircut and emerald eyes.
"Ah… It's been a long time since I've last seen you, Kohaku!" She chuckled softly. The boy smiled softly and sat on the edge of the bed next to her.
"You've been keeping busy, I suppose?" She asked.
Kohaku smiled and nodded. "I have."
Though, his smiled faded and he looked down. "I'm sorry I'm late." He mumbled, not making eye contact with the old woman.
"Oh you have nothing to be sorry about dear, I know you've always kept an eye on me, even after I left." She reached out and gently took ahold of his hand. Kohaku held her hand softly and looked up at her. "I'm glad I got to see your face one last time before I go."
Kohaku closed his eyes and kept his head down. "I wish you could have seen me without going back to the Spirit Realm." The old lady still kept the warm smile on her face and looked out the window again. "I know, but even though I couldn't see you, I could always tell when you were near." She faced the boy again and smiled. "Thank you for keeping your promise, Kohaku." She spoke out in a gentle, loving voice as the beeps started to slow down.
Kohaku got up and leaned over the old woman. She closed her eyes as the boy kissed her forehead softly. "You're welcome, Chihiro."
It wasn't long after that, when the steady beeping was replaced with a long, eerie wail.
