"Sorry I never got you that Valentine's date," Sam said, looking over at Rory. It was Tuesday night, officially the last few hours of Valentine's Day, and they'd both failed to get a date. He had been too busy chasing Mercedes to help Rory (because he totally didn't have a problem in which he wanted to punch the nearest wall every time Rory flirted with a girl). So instead, they were curled up on the couch watching Avatar.
"That's okay, Sam," Rory told him, throwing him a beaming smile that really did look genuine. "I'm sorry Mercedes rejected you."
Sam shrugged. "That's okay. I... haven't been as into her lately anyway," he admitted.
"Really?" Sam nodded. "Who are you into?"
"...no one." Sam saw Rory's face fall a little bit when it came out as an obvious lie, and he winced. Rory didn't push the matter, just turned back to the movie, but Sam felt a bad for keeping secrets from his best friend-and even worse when he remembered that he was really Rory's only good friend at McKinley.
"Who did you want to ask out?" Sam asked, wincing because he really shouldn't've asked the question he wasn't willing to answer, even if he felt like his life depended on whatever Rory said.
"I... don't really know," Rory told him with a shrug. "I used to like Brittney, but she's with Santana so..." Sam nodded. "But that's okay, this is fun!" Rory promised. "Thanks for being such a good friend, Sam."
"No problem," Sam told him, ignoring the little voice inside of him that told him he wanted to be more than just Rory's friend.
Just like his heart totally didn't skip a beat when Rory fell asleep on his shoulder just before the end of the movie, and he totally did not kiss Rory's forehead and pull him closer.
But he couldn't deny that this was the best Valentine's Day ever.
