Never Give Up

Chapter 1

14 year old Mitchie Torres was sitting in her room listening to "Broken" by Lindsey Haun, in hopes that her father would not come home tonight.

Her mother was out of town for the night and wouldn't be home until tomorrow.

Wake up to a Sunny Day
Not a cloud up in the sky
And then it starts to rain
My defenses hit the ground
And they shatter all around
So open and exposed
But I found strength in the struggle
Face to face with my troubles

When you're broken
In a Million little pieces
And your tryin'
But you can't hold on any more
Every tear falls down for a reason
Don't you stop believin' in yourself
When you're broken
Little girl don't be so blue
I know what you're going through
Don't let it beat you up

Mitchie was glancing at her book, the place where she was wrote her own songs. She was flipping through the songs that she wrote over the years.

Mitchie still had horrible bruises from the last beating that her father had given her on Sunday. After Mr. Torres came home from work, drunken, he found Mitchie playing and singing one of the songs she wrote.

He beat poor Mitchie badly that night, and told her that she was to never play or sing again. Her father had been telling her this for years but she never listened to him; she would never stop singing or writing songs.

Heaven knows that getting scars
Only makes you who you are
Only makes you who you are
No matter how much your
heart is aching
There is beauty in the breaking
Yeah

When you're broken
In a Million little pieces
And your tryin'
But you can't hold on any more
Every tear falls down for a reason
Don't you stop believin' in yourself
When you're broken
Better days are gonna
find you once again
Every piece will find it's place
When you're broken
When you're broken

Mitchie suddenly jumped out of her bed, startled, when she heard the front door slam shut. She heard heavy footsteps making their way towards her room.

Mitchie ran over to her CD player and quickly turned it off before her father reached her room.

She froze with panic when her father barged in and looked at her bed, and then at her.

Mitchie recognized the look in her father's eyes. It was anger. She quickly looked to her bed and saw that she had left her yellow book that said "Mitchie's Songs" out In the open. Her father, already furious, became even more enraged than he already was.

With a pang in her stomach, Mitchie knew she was in for a bad beating tonight.

Mitchie watched with dread as her father made his way over to her and abruptly stopped in front of her.

Steve Torres, Mitchie's father, grabbed Mitchie by her shoulders and started shaking her vigorously.

Mitchie felt her father tighten his grip on her arms so much, that she knew she was going to have many ugly bruises tomorrow. She looked in to her father's eyes when he started yelling at her.

"I THOUGHT I TOLD YOU NUMEROUS TIMES BEFORE THAT YOU ARE NEVER TO WRITE THOSE PATHETIC SONGS OR SING AGAIN. HAVEN'T I?! YOU WILL PAY DEARLY FOR DISOBEYING ME YOUNG LADY!" roared Steve, causing Mitchie to step back with fright..

With that, Steve started hitting, punching, and kicking Mitchie all over her weak body.

A few minutes in to the beating, Mitchie passed out in the middle of her room on the floor. Her father let her lie there, and left Mitchie's room.

Next Day

Wednesday may 28th 2008

Mitchie woke up with a start to feel pain all over her body. Her head was throbbing, and the pain was unbearable. She slowly managed to drag herself upward, and headed to her bathroom inside her room.

She knew her father had beaten her last night but she didn't remember passing out on the floor.

Mitchie starred in the mirror, and examined her bruises. There were now new bruises over her old, already existent, bruises.

From the swelling and the pain, Mitchie knew that she had a few bruised ribs from last night's beaten.

On her arms, she also saw two huge bruises in the shape of her father's hands from where he grabbed her last night.

Mitchie sighed glumly, as she knew that she would have to do her best to cover up her bruises.

Today was the last day of school and summer was finally here! Mitchie couldn't wait for the last bell of school to ring; she hoped that she would get to go to Camp Rock this summer.

Mitchie knew that her mom would be yelling for her to get up soon, and as if on cue, Mitchie heard her mom call up from the kitchen loudly.

"Mitchie, time to get up- last day of school!" urged Connie Torres, Mitchie's mother.

Mitchie quickly got dressed in a long sleeved and light purple shirt with jeans. and Afterwards, she covered her bruises with makeup and brushed her long hair and bangs as quick as she could.

She grabbed her book bag and her song book and headed to the kitchen for breakfast with her mother. She knew that her father would be gone already.

Kitchen of the Torres house

Mitchie sat at the table eating her cheese omelet and drinking her orange juice.

Mitchie's mother was making her way over to the table with a Camp Rock brochure in her hands.

Mitchie Glanced at the TV and then realized what was on. "Oh cool Hot Tunes is on. Turn it up please," requested Mitchie. Without responding, her mother turned the TV up with the remote and sat down at the table.

The TV showed a photo of Shane Gray with a new reporter talking.

The pop star phantom Shane Gray may have gone too far this time when he stormed off the set of Connect 3's new video.

Word is that the other members of Connect 3 are fed up.

This final stunt cost his label thousands of dollars, but may cost them the rest of their record deal.

"What is wrong with that boy? He's got everything," remarked Connie.

Mitchie replied, "Except a clue."

The message is clear, he needs to clean up his act.

And to give him time to do it, the Connect 3 summer tour is canceled.

"Look what I found in the crisper. A Camp Rock brochure. Or should I say another Camp Rock brochure," announced Connie looking through the Camp Rock brochure, and then to her daughter.

"Hmm….look at that. Oh and great cheese omelet, by the way. You should definetly add that to your catering menu," suggested Mitchie, with a playful smile on her face.

Connie and Mitchie were looking into each other's eyes.

"So you have no idea how this brochure got in there or the one taped to the vacuum cleaner?" asked Connie teasingly.

Mitchie just shrugged her shoulders at her mother's question.

"Sweetie, now I know you wanna go to this camp and I'm sorry but we just can't afford it right now. With dad expanding the store and my catering business just taking off…. Oh honey. I'm sorry." explained Connie with a genuine look of sorrow on her face.

Mitchie shifted her gaze down to her plate of food.

"I know. Uh, got to go, last day of school, don't want to be late," responded Mitchie, in a depressed tone. With that, Mitchie left the kitchen and headed to school.

Mitchie's high school

Students were walking around the halls, and catching up on summer plans. Mitchie is at her locker cleaning it out when her friend Sierra comes over and stands next to Mitchie.

Mitchie looks at her friend when she speaks to her.

"Hey Mitchie," greeted Sierra

"Hey Sierra," greeted Mitchie in a melancholy voice.

"Let me be the first to say Shing Sha Ji, Mitchie. It means happy summer Mitchie. Guess who got an A plus in AP Mandarin?! Me again. Sierra then reverted the topic back to Mitchie. So how did it go this morning?" wondered Sierra.

"It didn't. Camp Rock is a no-go," sighed Mitchie.

Sierra started, "But you have to go. Camp Rock is, like the music camp. Anybody who wants to be somebody in music…. All of which you already know. Sorry." Sierra realized what she was saying and stopped talking.

"Me too. I was just so excited to have a summer that was all about music and …," murmured Mitchie.

"I know. So what are you going to do this summer?" asked Sierra.

Mitchie shrugged her shoulders and just then, the bell rang. Mitchie and Sierra departed and went their own ways.

Torres Back Yard

Connie and her husband Steve Torres were in the back yard cooking out hand burgers when their daughter came home.

Mitchie looked up to see her father next to her mother who was standing near the food being cooked. So she took a deep breath she knew that she had to pretend that nothing was wrong between her and her dad.

Mitchie walked over to the outside table and put her book bag down on it.

"So how was work?" asked Steve with a fake smile.

"You know Barney's. We serve burgers with a Barney's smile. So what's for dinner?" questioned Mitchie

"Burgers." Said Steve

"Well, it's our world-famous Torres burger!" exclaimed Connie with delight.

"Umm… I'll pass," replied Mitchie.

"Okay, I can't stand it, tell her." commanded Steve, anxiety growing up on him.

"Well, Steve, she just got home," told Connie.

Mitchie turned around to face her parents and looked at them.

"Tell me what?" asked Mitchie, wonder in her eyes.

Mitchie's mother stated, "Okay honey, drum roll!"

"Mom," said Mitchie, curiosity getting the better of her.

"Okay, you're going to Camp Rock!" blurted out Connie.

"What?!" exclaimed Mitchie in disbelief.

"She said, you're going to Camp Rock!" repeated Steve.

"Well actually we're going. Connie's Catering is going camping! Businesses is slow in the summer, and this is a steady job, and you get to go to camp at a discounted rate!" proclaimed Connie.

Mitchie squealed so loudly, it could be heard from Antarctica!

"But you have to help out in the kitchen," reasoned Connie.

"Thank you! Thank you, like a million times!" shrieked Mitchie as she hugged her parent's carefully as to not hit her sore ribs too much.

They ate with a happy feeling in the air. Afterwards, they headed inside so Mitchie and her mother could get started packing for Camp Rock.
