This takes place right after season 2 ep. 15, "Gone with the Will".

Unable to sleep, and feeling the need to talk to someone, Serena picked up her phone. She felt like she was fifteen again, so completely confused about how to deal with the 'love triangle' that had secretly formed between her, Nate and Blair. But this time it wasn't about Nate, it was about Dan and their parents. And it was much more complicated. After dialing absentmindedly, she waited for Dan to pick up the phone.
So when it was not Dan that picked up, but Nate, she was as surprised as he was. But Serena had always believed in signs, so taking this as one, she spoke quietly, "Nate? Can we talk?"
He had always been able to calm her thoughts.
...
As he watched Vanessa leave, Nate wondered why, in all his relationships something always felt like it was missing.
He and Blair had had somewhat of an epic but also boring relationship, Serena always being his first choice and Chuck hers, though they might not have known it at the time.
His affair with Jenny couldn't really be classified as a relationship, because as fun as it might have been, it never felt real.
And then there was Vanessa. He genuinly liked her, but he was afraid they would just grow apart, as they were from completely different worlds.
His phone ringing interupted his train of thought. The caller ID read 'Serena'. Wierd, he thought.
"Hey, what's up?"
...
When Nate offered to come over, Serena's initial reaction was to refuse, but for some reason she agreed.
And when he arrived, they both realized how long it had been since they'd actually spoken.
Suddenly, they were fifteen again, talking for hours, both needing someone to just listen and not judge.
Eventually, they fell asleep on Serena's bed, just lying next to each other. Simultaneously, they both realized that even though Nate was with Vanessa, and Serena with Dan, the way they felt at fifteen was the way they'd always feel. So even if now wasn't their time, someday they would end up together. And nothing would be missing.
