The Game of Love Hearts
Rose opened two packages of sweets called Love Hearts and dumped them into a bowl.
"I played this as a kid," she told the Doctor and Jack. You take a sweet without looking. After you read it, you choose someone to give it to. They have to read it aloud then do what it says without blushing. First person to make someone blush wins. I'll go first."
Rose picked out a sweet. It had a heart stamped on it and a small saying. She gave the one she chose to the Doctor.
"Great Guy," he said and smiled. He picked one out, then gave it to Rose.
"Be Happy," she said. She smiled at the Doctor. "I am happy."
"This is far too mild," said Jack as he reached for a sweet. He looked at his choice with a mischievous grin. "Much better!" he said as he gave it to the Doctor.
The Doctor maintained a poker face.
"Read it out loud, Doc—Rose's rules," said Jack.
"Kiss Me," the Doctor said flatly.
Rose giggled. "You have to do it Doctor."
The Doctor rolled his eyes and kissed the top of Jack's head. He did not blush, but he did mutter something that sounded like "immature game."
Rose was still giggling as she picked out another heart and gave it to Jack.
"I'll be right back," he said to Rose without reading the words on the heart aloud, "but be prepared for this to backfire."
"What did it say?" the Doctor asked Rose after Jack had left the parlour.
"Can't tell," she teased.
Jack came back a while later with a cup of tea and a chocolate bar, and placed both in front of her. Then he stood behind her chair and began to massage her shoulders.
Rose relaxed but did not blush. "You can keep this up all night if you want to, Jack. This is heavenly."
"I have been told I have magic hands," he said in response.
The Doctor looked annoyed. "What is the meaning of—"
Jack grinned. "It said 'Pamper Me.' "
The Doctor narrowed his eyes at Jack before choosing a sweet and shoving it at Jack.
"Too Much," read Jack. The Doctor eyes were fixed on him like steel. Jack returned to his seat.
Rose, who had been lulled almost to sleep, missed the exchange and only opened her eyes when the massage ended.
"My turn," said Jack. He handed a heart to the Doctor that said "Hug Me."
"Hug Me?" asked the Doctor with mild annoyance.
"The goal is to make someone blush," Jack said with a shrug. "But I could give it to Rose if you—"
Jack was interrupted by a quick impersonal hug from the Doctor.
Rose's next choice said "Blue Eyes," so she gave it to the Doctor.
When the Doctor read it, Jack protested. "Hey mine are blue too!"
"Not as blue as mine," said the Doctor with a cheeky smile.
The Doctor gave his next choice to Rose.
"My Girl," she read as evenly as possible.
Jack looked at the faces of both of his friends for a sign of color in their cheeks. Both maintained perfect poker faces, but he was sure it was just a matter of time. It was his turn.
"I win," he said with a smile as he looked at the sweet in his hand. He showed the Doctor, but did not give it to him.
"Don't," warned the Doctor, but Jack raised an eyebrow at him then handed the heart to Rose.
Rose's cheeks began to flush before she began to speak. When she did, she stammered and her voice wavered.
"It says 'Hello.' "
Author's Note: These are all real sayings found on Love Hearts confectionaries. I just chose the order they occurred.
