This drabble kind of came to me out of nowhere while I was listening to a song which proves to be completely unrelated to the concept of this piece, so I don't really know what sparked the idea.
It's short. Really really, painfully short.
Disclaimer: I do not own Death Note or any of the corresponding characters. I mean no disrespect, and... yeah, still broke.
It was five minutes past midnight, and there was a wintry white moon spilling its light over the House, the willow tree, and Matt. The redhead stood amongst the gnarled roots of the tree with his hands deep in his pockets and violet goggles over his eyes. He was watching the branches wave at the man in the moon, carefully outlining their features in his mind's eye and in his mind's eye only, because that was his own private neurosis and no one else needed to know about it. Not when they all had their own to deal with. Being L took a lot of that sort of thing, he was told. All right, then.
Near came outside to get him at ten to one, because the little white boy was a lot like the wintry white moon; always up at this time of night, and he had to pass Matt's room to get to his own anyway. The gamer hadn't bothered to close his door all the way before coming outside just to see if he'd notice. When he felt a light hand on the gentle curve of the small of his back, because Near neither thought nor liked to reach higher, Matt pursed his lips. The touch flirted with his spine and it made the nape of his neck tickle. He wasn't sure he liked it. "Why am I so tired?"
"It's early," Near supplied calmly. He curled his fingers slowly in the redhead's sleeve, and felt him twitch a little bit, glancing quickly at him from behind his hair as he pulled his goggles down over his face. They dangled at his throat like some sort of exaggerated and terrifyingly garish necklace. He noted how Matt shivered, barely.
"Yeah," the redhead agreed, and went back to staring. "That's not what I meant."
Near hesistated just a breath. "I know."
