Rose Weasley threw her hand up and waved it in such an eager manner that Professor McGonagall was reminded strongly of Hermione. "Yes, Miss Weasley?"
"I don't understand, miss. If girls go with girls, and boys go with boys, why did my parents get married?"
Minerva hid her internal shudder. She knew this question was coming, it always did, but it never made it any easier to answer.
A noise in the corner drew her attention at that moment, and she turned and pointed at the culprits. "Scorpius, Albus, I appreciate that tonsil-hockey is a more popular sport that Quidditch at the moment, but you two will refrain from displaying your affection until out of class time. Ten points each."
The boys' groan of disappointment was lost in the annoyed whispers of their Slytherin classmates, dismayed at the loss of another twenty points in what was already a bad year.
Minerva stood even taller and pitched her voice to cut through the noise. "As I was saying, Miss Weasley, you must remember it is only in the Muggle World that such antiquated customs such as heterosexuality, monogamy and vanilla sex are perpetuated, although I'm given to understand that things are gradually improving. Here in the Wizarding World, we long ago calculated through improved Arithmancy that the best connections were like-with-like."
Rose was looking more and more distressed by the second, and the boy in front of her, who bore more resemblance to a Bubotuber thanks to teenage hormones, turned in his seat and sneered "Weirdo! Your parents are perverts!"
"That will be quite enough, Mr Longbottom. Ten points from Hufflepuff for that insult, and you will spend the next three evenings in Professor Parkinson's workroom, cleaning her cauldrons WITH YOUR TOOTHBRUSH" Minerva stopped and took a deep breath, then shook her robes and smiled very gently at Rose, trying not to show her own disgust at the girl's family situation. "Miss Weasley, we pride ourselves in the Wizarding World that we are adaptable and can cope with the winds of change. While magic has not yet found a way for a witch to become pregnant without the help of a wizard, despite what Professor Lovegood claims, it hasn't been usual for the two involved in the transaction to extend the normal acquaintanceship to anything closer. However, your parents have found something special, and shown us that we need to be open minded."
She smiled weakly. "And if the new Defense against the Dark Arts professor has anything to do with it, we'll be seeing much more."
"New professor, miss?"
"Oh yes." Minerva pulled a piece of parchment out of her pocket. "From next week, Professor Russell T. Davies will be taking those classes. From Wales. He has some new ideas to try out. I believe things will be changing quite a bit..."
