Shattered Glass

Chapter One

"Who are you?"

"...what?"

"Who are you?" Seely Booth repeated with a clearer, stronger voice.

"M..My name is..T..Temperance Brennan"

The memories of the dream washed over Booth. What was real? Was this the same woman as his dream? He tried to focus on the murky memories of the days before the operation.

"Bones..." It all came back in a flash. Grief gripped him, and his face crumpled with pain. This was the woman he loved dearly yes. But she neither knew nor loved him back.

"What Booth? What is it?" He could see worry and relief fill Bones' face at the same time, although she was relieved he had remembered her, she seemed to feel the pain his face expressed.

"When can I leave?"

Bones laughed, of course Booth would want to walk out the hospital doors immediately after waking up from major surgery.

"Well since you've woken up, the hospital said they'll keep you in for a couple more days, and then you'll be sent home on strict bed rest."

Tears filled Bones' eyes "when you didn't wake up... I thought... I thought" and suddenly Bones leapt up and wrapped her arms around Booth, burying her head in his chest. Booth could feel the sobs reverberating though her body.

"Hey, hey Bones, I'm ok, see? Look the old Seely Booth will be back in no time." He pulled her back so she could see his smile.

Bones smiled and opened her mouth, probably to make some retort about how it was not possible he would be the same. But Booth put his finger over her lips.

"Thank you"

"What for?"

"Knowing that something was wrong. Only you know me well enough, ay Bones?"

"Only I know you well enough to know that seeing fictional characters and ghosts is a bad sign? I think any rational human being would realise something was wrong."

Booth merely chuckled, then paused as though confused by where his train of thought had led him.

"Hang on, if I'm on strict bed rest, does that mean some weird old nurse is gunna come to my house and feed me her idea of food?"

Bones laughed, then threw Booth a sheepish look.

"Umm... No... I volunteered to look after you until you're back to full health"

"But what about your work?"

"I'm taking my holidays"

"Naw Bones you don't have to do that"

"I don't need to, but I want to make sure you're cared for properly."

A doctor strolled into the room and seeing that Booth was awake smiled broadly.

"Ah finally awake I see, did your lovely wife give sleeping beauty an awakening kiss?"

"Oh no we aren't married..." Booth and Bones stumbled over their protests.

"We're just partners" They said in unison, then looked at each other and laughed.

"Riiight" said the doctor with a bemused smile.

"Well your health is actually perfect apart from the reaction to the anaesthesia, everything went perfectly. If all stays the same your 'partner' should be free to take you home tomorrow"
