A thunderstorm and deciphered feelings
Daniel was at his desk, as usual. This was another lonely night working overtime. As far as he knew, he was the only one in the whole building. It was a stormy night at Mode. As soon as lightning flashed, thunder rumbled a second later. Daniel flinched. He had always been afraid during storms, but no one besides him, except her mom and sister, knew about his fear. Another second, lightning flashed and thunder rumbled. Daniel jumped out of his skin and soon he was on his back on the floor, his shirt flipped over his face, and his feet on his chair. He didn't know how he got thst way, but he was lucky that no one else had been here to hear or see his fall.
"Daniel, are you okay??" a high-pitched voice called. 'Oh no,' he thought, 'I thought Betty left two hours ago.'
"Yes." he said as he tried to get up unsuccessfully, "I'm fine." She giggled her contagious laugh as she watched him try to get up.
"Need a hand??" she asked as she put her hand out. He grabbed it and Betty helped him get up.
"Why are you still here??" Daniel asked her.
"I'm your assistant. When you leave, I leave." She said. The clock struck midnight. "No matter how late it is." He smiled as he realized how loyal and dedicated she was to her job. He admired her.
"Are you afraid of thunder and lightning??" Betty asked him.
"No." he said. "That's silly." She looked like she didn't believe him. As if on cue, lighting flashed, thunder rumbled, and Daniel hid under his desk. As he came back up, she looked knowingly at him. He blushed in embarrassment.
"So what if I'm afraid of storms??" he snapped. She first looked shocked, but then she calmed down.
"It's ok Daniel. Everyone is afraid of something." Betty said. He sighed. Betty was the last person he wanted to find out his fear of storms.
"Promise you won't tell anyone??" Daniel asked.
"I promise." Betty said.
"You know Betty, I have another fear." Daniel said.
"What is it??" Betty asked. He took a deep breath.
"My other fear is that when tell you what I'm about to say, it might make our friendship stronger or it will make you hate me." said Daniel.
"I could never hate you Daniel and I'll always be your friend, tell me." Betty assured. He took another deep breath.
"I love you." Daniel said and blushed. First, she was surprised, and then she was in denial.
"No, Daniel you could never love me. I'm ugly and fat and have braces, and have glasses and…." Daniel interrupted her.
"You're not ugly, fat, and it doesn't matter if you have braces and glasses." Daniel said. "You're beautiful." Betty started to cry and she hugged him and made him fall back into
his chair.
"No one has ever told me that before that I thought that they meant it." she said.
"I mean it, Betty." He said and kissed her. After a few seconds, she pushed him away and wiped her tears.
"Go slow for me Daniel." Betty said. "I don't want to be like any of the models that you've slept with."
"I will, Betty." He said. "I will." Then he kissed her and then they hugged each other until the storm had passed. When the storm passed, it was 2 am.
"Daniel, it's time to go home." Betty said.
"Ok, and Betty, thanks for….you know…." He said awkwardly.
"You're welcome." Betty said. Then they both went their separate ways, and Betty finally knew she was in love with the right person.
