Bilbo knew he should sleep given how much they were about to travel the next day, but he much rather lay there looking up at the rocky walls of the cave thinking of The Shire. The warm beds, tea time, meals, fire, books. He missed it all. Every second he thought of how he wished to go home, leave this adventure and go back where he belonged. Then, in the middle of his thoughts, Thorin would look over and him and he then knew why he stayed. For Thorin. Thorin never spoke to Bilbo, just glances. He wanted to please him, prove himself to him. Show that Hobbits are just as important as Dwarfs. The fire blazed next to Bilbo, casting dancing shadows onto the cave wall. It was a good night, silent, warm, no winds. Deciding sleep would never come to him he ventured outside with Sting. The night was full of magnificent stars, much more than in The Shire. Thorin sat upon a rock, looking into the distance. To Bilbo's surprise he spoke.
"Nights like this makes me think this journey is not as crazy as it seems," his voice was quiet. Bilbo didn't know what to say, he simply walked over to that rock and sat beside him. "I was reluctant to choose you as the 14th member of our company, but you have proved yourself, Halfling. You are more brave than most I know and even more so kind hearted," Thorin turned to look at Bilbo. His eyes were in a sultry gaze, boring into Bilbo's. In that moment Bilbo knew the real reason he stayed. Yes, for Thorin. Not to prove himself, but to simply be with him.
"I glad I came on this journey, I'm glad I met you," He returned the gaze, his cheeks burning brighter than Hobbits usually are. He cleared his throat. "Um, and, you know, the others," he turned back to the stars. Thorin placed his hand on Bilbo's shoulder. Bilbo held on to it, feeling his rough skin against his. It felt right.
"I'm very much happy I met you, Bilbo," The two travelers looked at each other. Their hearts light. Under the stars of Middle Earth they kissed for the first time. Thorin gripping Bilbo's head bringing him closer. Under that night sky they found what kept them traveling. What kept them brave. Something VERY unexpected.
