Somebody
Steve McGarrett heard the familiar roar of the Camaro outside and smiled. His family was here.
The front door slammed open and his adopted niece jumped into his lap, wrapping her arms around him. "Uncle Steve! I've missed you! Are you ok? Danno said you got hurt and he had to go save you again. Why are you always getting hurt? Danno and I need you here. I love you, Uncle Steve. Please don't go away again."
Tears filled Steve's eyes again and this time he let them fall. Grace was wise beyond her years. He leaned into her embrace as best he could. "I promise, Gracie" he whispered against her hair. "I wont leave."
Grace leaned back and studied his face. "It's a good thing we came. You need to eat."
"Yes, ma'am," McGarrett smiled and saluted, which made Grace giggle.
Unbeknownst to either of them, Danny stood in the doorway, watching them with a smile on his face. He knew Steve would need his daughter tonight. He would never forget the rush of relief he'd felt when they got the report Steve was alive and secured. But he also knew the man was hurting emotionally over Catherine's decision to stay. Personally he was not thinking favorably of her anymore. She was always leaving Steve for either Navy deployments or personal missions. The guy had been left behind too many times before. It was no wonder he had trust and abandonment issues. Which is why he'd talked to Grace on the way over about making sure to stay close to Uncle Steve because he needed some attention.
Not wanting to disturb their conversation, Williams walked quietly into the kitchen and dished up plates of Chinese food. He grabbed two beers and a bottle of water for Grace.
A princess movie was playing on the T.V. and Grace was snuggled in the Commander's lap, both intently watching the movie. Wordlessly, the detective handed them their plates and drinks before settling on the couch, content to let Grace work her magic on his hurting friend.
Steve looked over at him and smiled, starting one of their famous non-verbal conversations. 'Thanks, Danny. How'd you know?'
Danny shrugged. 'I know you. And Grace wanted to make sure you were okay.'
The SEAL nodded and smiled again at his partner before turning back to the movie and dinner.
Halfway through the movie, soft snoring was heard. Danny looked over to see the big badass SuperSeal asleep with Grace curled on her side against her uncle, one small arm flung protectively over his chest.
Not wanting to disturb them because he knew Steve needed them there, Danny got up to grab blankets and pillows for the night. He gently covered his slumbering partner and daughter before settling on the couch.
"Goodnight, Steve," he whispered into the quiet night. "You are not alone. Never will be again. We will never leave you. You are somebody."
