Disclaimer: I do not own Camp Rock.
A/N: Life has been crazy, and I haven't had any time to write. I wanted to something something – hence another drabble from pyro's lyric challenge. The quality is questionable, but I am out of practice.
86. "I want to be somebody else, 'cause I'm getting tired of myself."
Nate felt mildly ashamed of himself, but only mildly. Mostly he felt relieved. He was tired of being the responsible one on whom everyone depended. He was tired of always doing and saying the right thing. He was tired of acting like he was forty instead of seventeen.
He was tired of being himself.
Somehow exploding at that stupid intern had felt good, and he could totally understand why Shane had acted out. He was in the middle of pondering becoming the new, old Shane, when a voice startled him out of his thoughts.
"Well, that was interesting."
Nate turned to find Caitlyn leaning against the door of his dressing room watching him.
"They send you in to scold me," Nate sneered.
Caitlyn raised an eyebrow in response because Nate never sneered, but she didn't take his bait. She just entered the room and sat on the couch. Her silence unnerved him.
"The intern's an idiot!" He finally blurted out.
"You're probably right," Caitlyn agreed before returning to quietly watching Nate.
He had expected people to yell and fuss; that's what happened when Shane behaved badly. He had no idea how to respond to Caitlyn's apparent indifference. He had just thrown a huge temper tantrum and cussed out some pathetic college student; surely that deserved some reaction.
"Aren't you going to say something?" he asked her. "Yell at me or tell me I was a jerk?"
Caitlyn shrugged. "I can if you want me to. I was just waiting for you to tell me what's wrong."
"I told you what's wrong – the intern is an idiot."
Caitlyn smirked at him, "Yeah… that's not it."
Fuming, Nate glared at his best friend. "What the hell! Yes it is. She was a moron, and I yelled at her. End of story."
"Nate, she made a small mistake. Usually you would have helped her fix it and told her it was okay. Instead you pulled a Jekyll and Hyde. So you can tell me what's wrong or keep right on lying. Your choice."
Nate had always valued Caitlyn's honesty, her friendship, and the fact that she knew him better than anyone else, but at that moment, he really hated her. She was sucking all the fun out of his rebel moment. Now he just felt like an immature jerk.
He sighed before admitting, "I'm just tired of being responsible and together all the time. I just sort of snapped."
Caitlyn smiled at him, stood up and crossed the room. He was surprised when she hugged him, but he quickly hugged her back. Her acceptance of his confession gave him courage. "Sometimes I wish I could be someone else – a normal teenager who could screw up and have fun without it being a major news story."
"That's fair," Caitlyn said, pulling back a little to look him in the face. "I don't know how you kept it together as long as you did. But maybe taking your anger out on the intern isn't the best way to deal with it."
Nate blushed and looked ashamed. "I should probably go apologize, huh?"
Caitlyn nodded. "Probably."
Nate let go of Caitlyn and turned to go locate the poor girl.
"Hey Nate?"
He looked back at his friend.
"You know I love you, right?"
He nodded.
Maybe being Nate wasn't so bad after all.
