Our wedding cake was German chocolate, a double layer with chocolate roses decorating the top. Together we took the handle and sliced downward. The knife went smoothly through the cake like silk through water. Chase picked up his slice. He turned to me and in one quick motion threw it. I felt the smusy cake all over my face. Dimly I heard the gasps of shock behind me, but I was riveted by the smile beaming across Chase's face.
So, he decides that today is payback day, I muse. Well, we'll see about that.
I lick the chocolate off my lips. "Hmm," I say, "this is really delicious. How about you try some?" As I say these last words I lunge, a piece of cake in my hand. It lands with a very satisfying smack!
Chase wipes the chocolate out of his hair. He licks his hand. He frowns, blue eyes twinkling mischievously.
"No, I don't think I agree with you Rory. Something's missing." He steps closer, arching an eyebrow. "But," closer still, "I don't think I know what it is. Perhaps you can tell me."
He's close enough that I have to tilt my head to look into his eyes. "How?" I ask him. He leans down.
"With this."
I feel Chase's chocolate smeared lips on mine. He's right, there was something missing. I like how this one tastes better.
"Hey! Leave some cake the rest of us." We break apart at Kyle's words. We look at Kyle, then at the pieces of cake on the table.
"Are you sure you want some, Kyle?" Chase asks.
