"Die on a beach, huh?" Richie let out a chuckle, but it came out more like a derisive snort, and Seth raised an eyebrow.

"And what's wrong with that, Richard? Not brilliant enough for ya?"

Seth set his shot glass down on the nightstand with a resounding clunk, and Richie shook his head.

"No, your plan is just fine. It doesn't compare to this, though," he said with a grin, revealing just a hint of his culebra fangs.

"Being a bloodsucker? No thanks," Seth said firmly. He sat back on the motel bed and folded his arms behind his head.

"The bloodlust is a pain in the ass, but once you get past that, you're invincible. Stay young forever, never die, like the Lost Boys," Richie trailed off.

"Are we talkin' Peter Pan or '80s Keifer Sutherland?" Seth said with a smirk.

Richie rolled his eyes and reached for another cigar.

"Come on, Seth. You can't tell me that you aren't at least a little bit curious about it. Bank jobs would be a cinch. Bullets wouldn't hurt you anymore. You'd stay the same age, and the high school girls-,"

"Would stay the same age too," Seth finished, smiling at the Dazed and Confused reference.

"I don't know, Richie. That shit has to get old after a while. Nothing ever ends. Wouldn't you get sick of that?" he mused.

Richie took a thoughtful drag on the cigar and blew out a ring of smoke.

"Not tired of it yet, brother," he said quietly.

They sat in silence for a minute or so and watched the smoke ring stretch out until it was nothing.

"Well, we're in it together, whether you're a snake freak or a math nerd," Seth said with a grin. "It's working for us now, so if it ain't broke, I guess we shouldn't fix it."

Richie nodded reluctantly, and he opened his mouth to respond. He looked down at the charred remains of his cigar and turned it over in his hands before exhaling slowly.

"I just don't want you to be a liability out there," he managed.

"A liability? What is this, a fuckin' game of Risk? We're a team, Richard. We've done this before. Relax," Seth exclaimed.

"This is different. This is a whole new set of rules. Just watch your back," Richie said firmly.

"Nah, I've got an immortal fuckin' brother to do that for me," Seth snapped.

Richie bit his tongue, and this time, he tasted blood. He felt his breath catch in his throat as his mind, ever analytical, ran through all the possibilities and shit that they could get into.

Seth needed him, he thought solemnly.

They needed each other.
