Heartbreak
I see him staring at her with that longing look in his eyes. A horrible surge of pain rips its' way through my chest.
'Why does it have to be this way?'
"Lenalee!"
I turned to face the person who called me. Allen was carrying a stack of books in one hand and waving at me with the other. I waved back and waited for him to reach me.
"So… what's up?" I asked when he finally arrived.
He was slouched down, catching his breath. I waited patiently for him to answer.
"Nothing, nothing. Do you mind having lunch with me today?" he said while avoiding my gaze.
"Uhh… sure. Don't I do that everyday?"
He just smiled. Somehow it looks so fake…
"Oh! And can I borrow your locker? Mine is super far away,"
"Yeah, sure."
I turned the knob and waited for it to click, then I held the locker open for Allen. He stuffed in his stack of books.
"Thanks, Lenalee." He mumbled.
I nodded and followed him as we made our way to the rooftop.
"So, what do we have today?" he asks as he sat on our usual spot.
"Guess?" I said with a smile.
"Mitarashi dango!"
"Good job!"
"Yum!"
We ate in silence. This is strange, we normally eat while talking to each other. I've never seen Allen being quiet for more than 5 minutes.
"What's wrong?" I whispered.
He looked at me with a wistful look on his face. He looks like he's about to cry.
"She got a boyfriend," he whispered back.
I gasp. I have nothing to say to this.
"I lost… officially." He says in a smaller voice.
"I'm sorry," I said after a few minutes.
"Doesn't matter anyway," he said with a small laugh.
Then he hugged me.
I dropped my chopsticks in shock. I could feel tears on my back.
Allen was crying.
I hesitantly put my hand on his head and stroked his stark white hair as he cried more.
"Shh. Don't cry…" I cooed.
A moment of silence overwhelmed us. Soon, Allen wasn't crying anymore. But he was still hugging me. I didn't understand.
"Sometimes… I wish I had fallen for you instead." he whispered into my ear.
Tears were streaking down my face. I couldn't believe what he was saying.
'Me too…'
"Calm down, Lenalee. You're just going to confess, just going to confess to the guy you like…" I whispered to myself.
'Not to mention best friend…'
As Allen walks out from his biology class I corner him and dragged him to the rooftop.
"Wh-What's wrong?" he asked.
"I like you," I said as we arrived at our usual spot.
I could see shock written all over his face. My determination and confidence shattered as I saw him grimace.
"Sorry, Lenalee. I like someone else." he said.
I could feel rejection on my tongue, but I ignored it and smiled.
"It's okay. We're still friends, right?" I said.
Allen, being the oblivious idiot he is, smiled and said 'sure'.
That day, I went home and cried for two hours.
What he said just a few hours ago proved one thing;
He doesn't return my feelings.
He doesn't like me.
He doesn't love me.
He doesn't want me.
I cleared my mind of other things and focused only on remembering his face. His stark white hair, his pale skin, his silver eyes…
Then I think of nothing, and bring the blade across my wrist.
A/N: For a happier ending, you should check out the sequel, and the sequel to the sequel of this. (:
