Jacobs POV

In my mind I saw what Jared saw, that the trail of reeking vampire scent, getting stronger and more vile, led to an opening in the forest. I saw it as if I was there, seeing through the trees Jared hid behind, the dark-haired vampire exposed on the far side of the clearing. Sam and Paul were closest, with me, Embry and Quil not far behind. We all moved as swiftly as we could without alerting the blood sucker to our approach.

Jared, who had been so involved in watching the vampire, was distracted by a slight movement to his left, a staggered step backwards taken by another figure in the clearing, across from the vampire. Someone smaller, not as pale, with slower less graceful movements... human? The vampire leaned towards them, seeming to inhale deeply.

We kicked our pace up a notch, struggling to stay silent enough so the vampire wouldn't hear, but not wanting Jared to have to attack alone.

"I can take him." Jared thought angrily.

"Don't move!" Sam boomed. "We're almost there."

Jared caught a scent among the vampire stench... something too familiar. He didn't know it, and yet he did. Who?

"Bella!" the name rang loud in our heads as I thought it, mortified, and the figure became clearer in our minds as we perceived her identity. "What is she doing out here? Who is the vampire? Is it a Cullen?"

"He's moving to attack," Jared cried- my panic had affected them all. Not a Cullen then... or one who'd dropped the vegetarian lifestyle.

"Calm down," Sam ordered, slowing his pace as we converged on Jared's location. The order suppressed my torment but it welled below the surface. I felt ready to burst. As Sam continued the rest of us were forced to the ground by his words. "No one move. I want to be 100% sure what's going on before..."

And then, the wind changed. The blood suckers head snapped up in our direction.

"Dammit!" Sam moved forward, breaking out of the trees. We all awaited his word to move with him. The vampire was stepping backwards, glaring in our direction.

"I don't believe it" the vampire breathed. Sam growl sharply, and Bella's eyes were on him. As she took in Sam with eyes bugging, her terrified gaze kept flickering back to the black haired vampire, as if she didn't know who to fear more. Sam ordered Paul and Jared forward, as they broached the trees Sam released the order to stay on Quil and Embry too. They stepped forward and I felt a wave of rage at being left behind, alone, when my place was between Bella and the monster who dared threaten her.

The vampire was almost at the trees. I fought the whimper building in my throat, the instinct to run at him, attack him, to tear out his throat for going within a hundred miles of my defenceless Bella. It was a testament to the intensity of the situation that Paul and Quil barely bothered to linger on the phrase 'my Bella'.

Finally, a second later, Sam allowed me to move. I stepped forward, but moved slightly to the left towards Bella. She saw me emerge from the trees, her breath caught in her throat. I looked at her, right in the eye, willing her to recognize me, not to fear me. Her stare seemed to relax ever so slight, but the vampire made it to the trees and spun around.

"Let's go!" Sam growled, for a split second my own torment at leaving Bella raged against my brothers eagerness to follow my previous instinct to rip the blood sucker to pieces. But then I gave over to my fury and sped after the pack, after the vampire, into the trees.
