It was the first time Rigby ever saw it happen. And it shocked him.
Margaret was clearly caught off guard by it too. She had always thought that she had Mordecai wrapped around her finger. But this? Well this rejection obviously proved just the opposite.
"I mean, I get that it's awkward to go to a wedding alone Margaret, but I'm just not interested in being your date," Mordecai had just told her, giving an indifferent shrug. It had been a few minutes and she still wasn't responding. She just stood there with an astonished look on her face. The Blue Jay was beginning to feel uncomfortable. "You're cool with that, right?"
Margaret had no idea what to think. She took a moment to process, and then felt anger taking control.
"How dare you!" She angrily exclaimed, with slight frustration seeping into her voice. She proceeded to give him a slap right across the beak.
"Wha..?" Responded Mordecai, confused by her outburst. He rubbed his stinging beak.
"You're supposed to be my back up plan! The one time I actually need you and you tell me no-" She ranted, before realizing what she had just revealed. "Oh I mean..um..." She tried to think of a recovery.
Mordecai's emotion shifted from confusion to anger.
"I'm your WHAT?!" He shouted "I've been trying to ask you out for months, and it turns out I'm just your stupid back-up plan! Thank god I finally got over you, you stupid bitch!" He yelled, but then took a breath to calm himself. "Come on Rigby, lets bail," he said, walking away without giving anyone time to react.
Margaret simply stood there, once again caught off guard and shocked. Rigby, who had been standing behind Mordecai watching this all go down, tried to stifle a smile. He mumbled a quick goodbye to her and chased his friend out of the coffee shop and into the cold winter air.
As Rigby caught up, Mordecai turned to make sure he wasn't alone on the sidewalk. "Wow dude, can you believe the nerve of her, admitting something like that to me! I don't ever wanna see her again. This totally sucks."
"Yeah man, totally," Rigby agreed with his friend. He noticed that Mordecai was shivering and nudged himself a little bit closer to him. Mordecai was so busy thinking about that rude robin that he let it happen without giving it a second thought.
As the unlikely pair happily strolled down the road on their way back to the park, Rigby couldn't help thinking to himself, maybe things weren't going to be that bad anymore.
