All the normal disclaimer stuff, I own nothing of Labyrinth. This will be my second attempt at a fanfic, hopefully a long-ish one. First chaper is short, they should get longer though :) Please do review, CC always welcome :) And rating may change at a later date when more chapters are written, we shall see where they go! ~

Jareth stood in the Goblin castle, staring unseeing with his mismatched eyes out the window at his kingdom below. He was thinking intently, tapping his riding crop absentmindedly against the top part of his tall black boots as he did so. It had been about a month in human time since Sarah, the beautiful girl that had wished her younger brother to his realm, had then conquered both the Labyrinth and himself. That had never happened before, but then again, the Labyrinth had never been so happy to have anyone trying to conquer it. No one had ever made friends with its occupants so easily, or understood the rules, even if she didn't like them, so well.

His mind wandered back to the days he used to spend Aboveground, watching humans come and go through the park in his owl form. There was always one little girl in particular he always noticed. She was a beautiful little girl, full of spirit, no more than 5 years old, jumping about the rocks and trees of the park with regal pride as she imagined herself in other worlds. And she had the pull of the Labyrinth about her. He felt it, the sentient being that was the Labyrinth, pulling him towards the girl. This had made him wonder what it was about her that drew him to her through the Labyrinth. That was when he had started monitoring her. He wanted to find out what could this mere slip of a human child could have, that would make her worthy of being marked by the Labyrinth.

He sighed, pulling back from his thoughts. He had a long night of spell weaving ahead, as he had done since Sarah had beaten his Labyrinth and gone back Aboveground. He hadn't worked out what exactly was wrong yet, but there had been . . . changes, in the magic of his home since the champion had defeated it, and he intended to not only find out what was going on, but to fix whatever the problem was. He steeled himself with fiery resolve, before turning his gaze away from his beloved home below him, and retreating to his study to being another long night.
