A Silent Thank You
It had become a bedtime routine for him. Every night, after dinners had been eaten, baths taken and stories read, Jack would sit up from his bed and walk up the flight of stairs to the second floor and peak into the five rooms of the Little Sisters. More often than not two or three of them would be empty, but Jack wouldn't panic. He would simply smile and move on to check on the last Sister where sure enough, he would find the missing girls tucked in with each other fast asleep.
Jack would lean against the frame of the doorway and just listen to the silence of the house: the swishing of the leaves in the evening breeze, the quiet breathing of the Little Sisters as they dreamed, and the overall peace of the nightly reverie. Peace. Something that they had all well-earned after facing all of the terrors that Ryan's Rapture had inflicted upon them, terrors that, sadly, would plague Jack in some form for years to come. But for now, Rapture was like a nightmare, a dim and long-forgotten memory in the face of the past two years. Years that had been filled with so many wonderful and quiet days.
"And it's been all because of you." Jack whispered quietly to the sleeping little girls. "I've never said it out loud before, but I have you all to thank for making these past years the happiest of my life." Walking in and leaning over the bed, Jack planted a gentle kiss on the brow of each sleeping child. "Thank you, all of you, and know that I will always love you."
