The Wish

This is a response to a challenge to write a fic explaining why Maddie hates ghosts. My idea: a bad childhood experience.

Three-year-old Maddie giggled as she finished watching Casper, The Friendly Ghost. "Mommy, I want to meet a ghost!" she said.

"That's nice dear," said her mom, not paying any attention to her.

"Ghosts don' exist!" her sister, Alicia, teased.

"But what about Casper?"

"It's just a movie."

"I hate you!" Maddie shouted. She ran to her room. She cried into her pillow until night, when her mom came to comfort her.

"Maddie?"

"Go 'way!"

"Maddie, is something wrong?"

"Yes,"

"It's okay to be sad, honey. You know what I used to do when I was sad?"

"What?" asked Maddie, no longer crying.

"I used to wish on stars. Want to try?" Maddie nodded. Maddie's mom opened the pink curtains. Maddie came to the window. Her mom held her up so she could see. "Okay, Maddie. What star is the first one you saw?"

Maddie thought for a moment, the pointed. "That one!"

"Go on," Maddie's mom prompted her child. "Make a wish."

"I wish that I could meet a ghost!" Little did she know, the wish was about to come true.

Cliffy! Ha ha! See how it ends next time.
