It's been a bad day

"Kaylee!" Captain Malcolm Reynolds hollered into the apparently empty engine room.

A muffled groan met his ears barely audible over the hum of Serenity's engines. Striding forward he knelt beside Kaylee where she lay on her side along the wall her eyes scrunched shut a bit of dampness on the side of her head. With a heavy sigh he wrapped an arm around her slender shoulders easing her into a sitting position he ran calloused hands through her hair pulling them away tinged red.

"Kaylee, what happened to you?" he asked concerned.

Blinking a few times to clear her head, Kaylee paused for a moment before launching into her explanation, "Well Capt'n, what with things looking the way they were. I was sure our boat was sunk. I mean the internal compressor was shot to bits! Our world was about to end in a big way. I was sure it was. But then-"

"Kaylee," Mal said warningly

Kaylee blinked at his interruption before cutting to the chase, "Well, you know 'bout that I suppose. Anyway, I was sure the world was ending…and then, I tripped."

"You tripped?" Mal asked to clarify, incredulous.

"That'd be the truth." She chirped

"We survive all that ruckus, and our worst injury is a concussion from you fallin' o'er after the fact?"

"It sure seems that way Capt'n." She said a sheepish smile on her pretty face.

Mal laughed, "Well, if that's the worst, I'll be glad of it and thank my lucky stars." So saying he scooped Kaylee up carrying her to the infirmary.

"Hey doctor, looks like I do have a patient for you!" he called ahead of them.

This very short little drabble was inspired by a dear friend who was having a bad day and in explanation cheerily explained, "The world was ending, and then I tripped."

This is what my brain saw. I love you dear. Please be careful, the ground has it out for you.
