Written for Inspiration Day at bsg-epics: "Something they're thankful for" prompt: test results
.
.
Weariness was etching lines in her face, harsher than they'd appeared yesterday. There was still so much to do, so many things she wanted to do….
At least he was here by her side this time. He'd keep her on task, no matter what. He'd make sure she stayed the course.
"Is it almost over?" she asked, afraid to look.
"It's winding down, sweetheart." His voice lowered. "You'll be able to rest soon."
"Thank the Gods." She rubbed her bleary eyes. It was getting hard to see, everything looking doubled. She held out her hand to him without looking. He placed the next paper in her left hand, patted the right.
"Bill, I don't know if I can…."
"Just a few more."
"Don't I deserve some time for myself? Some time with you?" she said in a plaintive voice.
He began rubbing her back in slow, even strokes.
"Those kids worked hard, Laura. You promised them their test results before the Groundbreaking festivities."
"I never should've offered a two hour delay tomorrow for anyone getting a 90 or higher," she grumbled, tapping her red pen on the sheet in front of her.
The last test finally scored, her face regained some of its usual color. She began to grin. "They all made it. They all can enjoy a late morning."
She sashayed to the front of the school tent, gleefully posting the test results on the front post, followed by the delayed start time.
"Since we've got some extra time on our hands, let me show you what I found up in the hills." She pulled him towards her tent, mischief lighting her eyes.
He hadn't been this grateful for good grades since flight school.
