Little Flowers
When Sasuke was twelve, he was irritated with Kakashi for assigning them a new training mission; to give a valentine gift and letter to each of their teammates. He put very little time into Sakura's, painfully aware that she would adore it whatever he gave, and left it as a yellow carnation (rather than red - implying romance - or pink - too like her hair, she might think he liked the strange colour) and a plain note saying 'I hate sweets, not thanking you in advance'.
As predicted, Sakura spent the whole next day with the yellow carnation tucked behind her ear, and he had to throw away yet another pile of gaudily wrapped boxes of chocolates and other confectionary, including a small addition from the pink haired kunoichi-in-training.
Naruto's gift took a little more thought. At first he was going to go with the simplest choice - a free meal of ramen at Ichiraku's - but after a while he changed his mind. That was too obvious, and he was beginning to view it as a challenge.
After some long hours of sifting through his memories for anything the baka might have shown interest in, he was about ready to give up. It wasn't that he couldn't find anything; it was more that Naruto showed interest in, well, everything. And none of it was very useful when coming up with a present for the annoying blond dobe.
He wrote out the required 'letter', for want of something better to do.
Dobe
This is the most pointless exercise Kakashi has ever had us do.
If you plan on ever beating me in a fight, hurry up and improve.
Uchiha Sasuke
It took him less than a minute, and then he spent the rest of the day trying to think of a gift. He was so distracted, he didn't even hear Kakashi telling them they could go home, and only noticed when Naruto yelled it into his ear at the top of his always deafening voice.
On the fourteenth of February, he woke up at five in the morning, shivering, and bolted upright. His bedroom window had just slid shut with a tiny thunk. He looked around swiftly, and then paused in surprise and looked at the folded piece of paper on his pillow, with a small sprig of jasmine sitting next to it. He picked it up and read the messy handwriting slowly.
To the teme
I couldn't think of anything to get you, so tough. Be happy I didn't give you chocolate, boring jerk.
Found the jasmine on the way here, so you can have that. I like it, so I don't care if you do or not. Throw it away if you want.
Naruto
He lifted the star-like white flowers to his nose and smelled the sweet perfume thoughtfully. Then he gave a tiny smile.
Naruto went straight back to sleep. An hour later, he woke up with a shock from an odd dream about the teme smiling, as if that was even possible, and found a matching piece of paper and another small sprig of jasmine sitting beside his head.
I like jasmine too, dobe.
