It was a sunny fall afternoon as Clara made her way down the strip center alone. She headed to the antique shop at the end with a darkened, care-free look on her face.
Clara was a sour, down-to-earth kind of girl. Punkish, and loving rock and roll, she dawned a true American accent.
Her parents divorced all but three months ago. Clara swore a lot and used 'bloody hell' as much as she could in a conversation. She now lived with a father in a small apartment in London who barely noticed she was there. Well, better than a mother who completely ignored you…
Clara opened the door and the smell of old wood and dirty metal filled her nostrils. She sneezed twice and a man entered from a back room.
"You said this was important, Al. What?"
The old man smiled an almost toothless smile and told her, "Well, well, Miss Clara. A delight to see you. I just inquired a interesting necklace and thought you might want to see it." His blond hair shone brightly in the dimly lit room and his eyes were large and kind.
"I'm not interested in jewelry," she reminded him curtly.
"You do collect interseting things…why not jewelry also?"
"Fine. Where is it?"
"Here it is. Right there." Al pointed to a case that was to the right of Clara. His stubby finger was pointed at a neckleace with a long silver chain.
"Can I look at it more closely?" She kept her voice semi-interested.
Al handed the necklace to Clara. She studied it. There was a heavy silver locket hanging from the chain. On the top part of the locket was a picture of a starry sky. Underneth the picture was the other half of the locket.
"Can I open it?" she asked not taking her eyes off the necklace.
"If you want an adventure." He winked and walked to the cash register.
She gave a confused glance at his retreating back, and opened the locket.
A bright light issued from it. She tried to shield her eyes but it still was too bright. She thought it was just Al shooting a flashlight beam into the mirrored inside.
But when she tried to turn around she was sucked into the necklace. And the necklace was sucked into the small portal it created.
The world was frozen in time.
