Final Farewell

Soon After the Clone Wars

Life is full of pain, but that doesn't mean there is not pleasure

She held tightly to the strong man before her. His arms were around her waist, her head on his shoulder. They both swayed gently to the music, relaxing as they moved. She knew this would be the last time they would dance. He knew it too. So she smiled at him with tears in her eyes, he told cheep jokes and she pretended to laugh. They played like everything was fine, though both know it wasn't. They walked and talked, ate and danced, smiled and whispered, laughed and kissed. He held her just the same as he always did, she smiled at him they way he loved her to. They acted as if this were nothing more than a nice evening out. Both knew it wouldn't last. She didn't cry, he didn't scream. Who would want their last night to be full of tears? They were both in denial, but it was alright. People can always pretend to be happy even if they aren't. When the next morning came they acted no different then they always did. They ate breakfast and he packed his bags. Still they did not speak of what was to come. They walked to where his shuttle was leaving and said their good-byes. It was no different than if he were leaving for a weekend trip, except they both knew he might never return. Nothing was left unsaid, other than their worries. She wanted to cling to him like a child and cry and tell him he couldn't go, but she didn't. He wanted to hold her tight and say that he would stay, but he didn't. They had to be strong. As he was boarding the ship he lifted his hand in final farewell. He said, "I'll miss you. I love you." She smiled and said the same. Then he said what she wanted to hear, "I'll be back soon, don't worry." Even though they both knew the word were lies, they were comforting somehow. She had wanted to hear them, he had wanted to say them. She smiled and said, "I know." The shuttle closed its ramps and took off for space. She didn't let the first tear fall until she knew the ship had gone. No sooner had the lone tear fallen then she wiped it away. No time to cry, she thought. He'll be back soon. But he never came back. Just like they had known, he lost his life in battle. She stayed strong, continued without him and raised their son. And through it all, his loving sprit was with her.

*Author's note* Incase you were wondering, this story is about Nejaa Halcyon and his wife, Scerra. If you remember, that's Corran Horn's real grandfather.
