It's the second time Katniss and Peeta are in the arena and it's hell. And she knows. She knows something is amiss. Haymitch is almost sober and when he thinks she is asleep, he paces through the penthouse like a caged tiger. The night he leaves, he rigs the electricity on their floor. She is standing in front of her mirror in the bathroom after taking off her Capitol mask of make-up and fake hair when everything goes dark.
She hears his steps in the hallway coming closer, a short knock on her door and he opens it without waiting for her response. "Haymitch, what-", but by the time the words leave her mouth, he has taken the distance between them in a few strides. When he reaches her he swiftly pulls her into an embrace and cups her cheeks with his hand. His lips meet hers and he silences her in the sweetest way - it only takes her a moment to realize what this means.
She pulls away. "Please, please stay safe, I couldn't-" is all she manages before Haymitch kisses her a second time, careful, tenderly, passionately - and she can feel a little smile forming on his lips when she responds eagerly to his kiss. After what seems an eternity and the blink of an eye all at once he pulls away. And before he rushes from the apartment - the last time she sees him for a long, long time - he whispers in her ear: "Stay alive, my love."
