"That was some ceremony, wasn't it Gray?" Claire asked.
"Hm? Oh! Yeah, it was. Couldn't ask for a better wedding. Or a better bride," I say.
Claire blushed slightly. "Can't believe we're married," she sighed.
"Believe it." I still couldn't believe it myself. Our first day as a married couple and it was almost over. Never thought anyone would want to marry me.
She snickered. "Remember when Rock got everyone to do the funky chicken?"
I smiled at the memory. "Yeah. Half of those people were drunk, though," I say.
Claire shrugged. "I don't know about you," Claire said, "but I am extremely tired. I'm going to bed. You coming?"
"Yeah, I'll be there in a minute," I call back to her. I walk into her bathroom, subconsciously twisting the ring that now occupied my ring finger. Closing the door behind me, I search for the bottle of hand lotion I knew Claire always kept under her sink. Call me girly, but I use it sometimes. Being a blacksmith, my hands both look and feel like leather, and to be blunt, I don't like it. Of course, Claire doesn't know I mooch her lotion, and she never will. Thank the Harvest Goddess she gets the unscented kind.
After I was sure the lotion had dried, I brushed my teeth and headed out the door. It had been a long and rather tiring day. I heaved a sigh, ready to hang my hat on the hook on the wall when I stopped dead in my tracks. Claire was in the bed, about ready to doze off. That was normal. What I didn't like was that she was on the LEFT side of the bed. I always slept on the left side of the bed, ever since I was little. And I wasn't about to stop.
"Claire…" I whisper. "Claire." I say a bit louder while shaking her shoulder.
"What, Gray," she sighed rolling over to face me.
"Um, it's no big deal, it's just… I was wondering if you would mind scooting over…"
"You can get on the other side," she said.
I cleared my throat, praying this wouldn't turn into an argument. "That's the thing. I don't like the other side. I've always slept on the left side and…"
Claire sat up in the bed. "So have I," she said.
Great.
"It's just that I sleep better on that side," I say.
"Look, Gray. My job requires a lot of physical labor, so it's really important that I'm comfortable enough to sleep so I can do that job." Her voice was like steel. Not a good sign. This was going to get ugly.
"So does mine!" I say back.
"Please." Claire rolled her eyes. "All you do is hit hot metal with a hammer."
I could feel my face heating up. "At least you get a break! All you do is sit on your ass all Winter long! But me? Oh, no. Not me! If anything, my work is harder in the Winter!" I shoot back. What were we doing? Sure we have argued before, but not over something as dumb as this, and especially not on our wedding day.
Claire was on her feet now. "Sit. On. My. Ass? Sit on my ass!"
"Uhhh… I didn't mean that…" I say.
"Ok, Gray," she said folding her arms. "If the right side of the bed isn't good enough for you, I'll give you somewhere else to sleep."
Uh-oh.
That's how I ended up sleeping in the barn. Yes, right next to the cows, with nothing but an old blanket. With an itchy pile of hay under me, I ask myself: why didn't I just sleep on the right side of the bed?
I think it's rather funny. It's a bit exaggerated, but I think that's what makes it funny. I think Gray and Claire were just sleep deprived XD
