The One That Got Away
Bree found herself sitting in her living room, already missing her. She missed her hair. Her eyes. Her smile. The way she crinkled her nose when she laughed that beautiful, contageous laugh that could be heard houses away. Ever since Katherine left, the lane wasn't the same. Bree thought of all the times she had a chance to tell Katherine how much she really, truly loved her. But now she was gone. Gone with another woman who she'd barely known for a month. And she didn't even say goodbye.
Bree felt the tears rolling down her cheeks.
In another life, I would be your girl.
We'd keep all our promises; be us against the world.
Bree walked up the stairs to her room. She noticed the door was slightly open. Figuring it was just the wind, she opened it all the way to find Katherine sitting on her bed.
"Kath! How- Where...?" Bree stuttered, shocked to find the woman sitting there in silence, "What are you doing here? How did you get here? I thought you were on your way to Paris with Robin."
"Yeah, so did I. We were at the airport when the guilt hit me... I didn't say goodbye to you. I asked her if we could come back just for a bit so I could let you know that I was leaving. I couldn't find it in my heart to leave you just like that. After all, you're my best friend on the lane.", Katherine said
"Where's Robin?"
"She..." Katherine's voice cracked, "She left. She said that if I'd rather chose you over her, that I could stay here. And she left to Paris without me." Katherine began to sob. Bree had never seen her this way. She sat next to her on the bed and rubbed her back, consoling her.
"Katherine, I'm so sorry to hear that. It means so much to me that you came back to say goodbye. I'm here for you. I always have been. We promised, remember?"
Katherine smiled sheepishly. "Yeah. I love you so much, Bree. You're a true friend. She probably wasn't worth it if she was going to be so jealous of our friendship." katherine said, putting her head on Bree's shoulder. Bree ran her fingers through her soft, auburn hair. She'd never been this close to her before. She'd never seen her this raw. And she was tired of letting perfect chances like this slip away.
"I love you, too, Kath. I love you so, so much. Probably not in the way you love me. But I love you."
Katherine sat up, "What do you mean?"
Bree sighed. She couldn't believe she was actually about to tell Katherine the truth.
"I'm... I'm in love with you, Katherine."
Silence. That's what followed. It went on for what felt like hours but was, in reality, about 5 minutes.
"Katherine? Katherine, say something please."
"I can show you..." Katherine said seductively.
Katherine slowly turned around. She got closer and closer to Bree. So close that Bree could feel her breath and her heat. She slowly reached up to touch her face.
Bree closed her eyes...
"Mom!" Andrew said, awaking her from her dream. "Mom! It's 10 AM! What are you doing asleep? We have a meeting with the Mintzes for their son's bar mitzvah. I'll wait for you in the car."
Bree found herself on the couch. She swore her face still felt hot from where Katherine's hand was. Katherine. Just thinking of her made her tears start flowing. She'll always love her. The one that got away. All she has left are her dreams.
In another life. I would make you stay
So I won't have to say you were the one that got away
