This is my very first songfic, if you can call it that. I wrote this a month ago when I went on a field trip to the Massachusetts Poetry Festival. I was in a workshop about incorporating music into poetry, and I did an exercise where I had to write a poem about a song, or to be read while listening to a particular song. I chose one of my favorite non-vocal songs, "Bella's Lullaby" by Carter Burwell.

"Bella's Lullaby"

The music has a mysterious,

ephemeral quality.

The opening is dark, consistent,

gradually joined by other instruments.

The music is soft, brushing by

like a breeze ruffling my hair.

Midway through, it accelerates

building to a climax that asks a question.

The melody is the answer,

explaining and listing

reasons for being happy.

The ending is uncertain,

Yet somehow inevitable.
