A/N: Hello and welcome. The following fic is my foray into GH fanfiction. I've had this particular idea for a few weeks now.
Anna Devane has always fascinated me as a character. When she lost Duke, with that being the motivation that drives her as of late, I thought that the concept of this fic could work. I got the inspiration from another source I love, music. When Tremonti released the lyric video for their single "Dust", I heard it once and strangely enough, Anna was all that ran through my mind as I took in the music and lyrics.
This fic will NOT be a Songfic, but know that Dust is the foundation on which this fic stands. Enough talk, I present you with the fic.
To better understand the emotional impact the song has here, I suggest listening to Dust by Tremonti before reading this fic.
The Ashes You Left To Bury Us
Anna stood behind the curtain, breathing in and out laboriously as a warm up exercise. The annual General Hospital Nurse's Ball was upon her again, but the joyous occasion struck Anna with a lingering depression. All of her senses came crashing down around her as she heard the rapid clatter of Lucy's high heels against the stage.
"Okay everyone, next up is one of Port Charles finest. Relax and allow this lovely lady's sexy voice embrace you. Give it up for Anna Devane!"
The curtain was raised and suddenly her shield was gone. Anna looked out at the crowd nervously, stepping up to the microphone with a sigh, "This one's for someone really special to me," she spotted Griffin sitting closest to the stage, "This one's for Duke." She took in a breath as she heard the gentle guitar riff announcing her song.
Tears were threatening to fall every time she opened her mouth to sing. Such lines as "The whole damn thing has turned to dust/ The Ashes you left to bury us" hit her in the gut with such emotional force she could barely compose herself. She missed Duke more than anyone knew possible; her long winded pursuit for justice had been fruitless. The thought of Carlos dying without first confessing to Duke's murder, and the mere fact that the person who she felt was truly responsible sat in the very room in which she performed. Her heart ached for him, and longed for the day they would finally be reunited.
All of a sudden Anna looked to her left, and standing two feet from her on the side of the stage was the love of her life. "Bled for the right to see it through, Now is the time to carry you." She sang in a soft croon. She nearly lost her place when it finally hit her that her beloved Duke was watching her. The emotion ripped through her, making the "ooh" before the ensuing solo all the more emotional and raw.
Anna fell to her knees at that moment, microphone in hand. She reached out for him desperately as she croaked out the final chorus. She wished the proceeding moments would've lasted a lifetime.
"The whole damn thing has turned to dust," she repeated though the song had already concluded, "You left us alone, defeated us."
She still loved him, heartbroken as she was. She realized that her life was not, in fact, dust at all. Griffin cheered louder than everyone it seemed.
A/N: Well, everybody, how'd this turn out for you? Great, I hope. As I'm more of a Jasam supporter, though I've always identified with Anna's struggle, especially after losing Duke. Please leave me a short review and let me know what you think.
