Warning: not a happy ending
The fire whiskey burned down his throat and left scorch marks in his stomach. It was nothing. Nothing in comparison to what Voldemort had done to all those Muggles and Muggleborns; what he would do again and again to more and more people.
"It's the end of the world as we know it," Regulus murmured to Barty, who was looking deep into his own glass next to him. "He's won."
Slowly, Barty rolled his head towards him. "Re-" His tongue struggled over the rest and fell flat in his mouth. "Regu- Regulus," he finally utered. "We need a… A safe place. Safe haven."
"You 'n me?"
"Yeah, us two."
Regulus left the glass in front of him for what it was, forgot for a moment about the parents and their baby that were killed last night, and turned to the best thing in this world of war: Barty. "That'd be- amazing."
Matching smiles broke their faces apart; a small glow in the darkness of their eyes. And two pairs of lips crashed together, not caring that they were in public.
The next day, they met in front of the bar. Small suitcases in hand holding all their belongings. The empty hands? They used them to hold onto each other and give support.
Around them, the world was dark, filled with cloaks and masks and madness. Lit only by green flashes of light.
"I love you," they said one last time. Hands clasped together. Ready to run away from it all.
Then, two flashes of green hit and two bodies fell to the ground. Holding hands. Forever.
