He could feel the dirt flying haphazardly under his paws as he hit the ground heavily, running full force. He had to catch it. His heart was pounding against his chest – hard. It almost hurt. He needed to get to it. Killing the parasite was the only thought on his mind. It was crucial for Jacob to catch that leech and tear it to shreds.

The leech was only a few yards ahead of him; it's long brown hair blowing behind it as it ran. If he could just run a little faster. Jacob lowered his head so that it was leveled with his shoulders and pulled his ears back. His paws dug deeper into the earth pushing him faster. He was so close. Jacob was about a foot away from the leech. He opened his mouth to grab it by the ankle and–

Fuck! The bloodsucker had leapt into a tree a second before Jacob could latch on to it. Jacob glared into the tree and growled. Come down! he thought at it, angrily. Over the past few weeks, the bloodsucker had been sneaking onto the tribe lands. Each time, the pack had chased it away; it would evade them, almost as if it could read their thoughts. It became apparent one afternoon when Jacob joined them that it was actually possible for the leech to read thoughts. It baffled the pack since they thought only the Cullen kid had this power. They became even more freaked out when they realized it could think back at them.

I know you don't really want to kill me, Jacob. Just give up.

Never! Jacob scratched at the ground like a bull would before it charged and ran into the tree, causing it to shake violently. The leech lost its grip and fell from the tree. Jacob knew their kind had amazing reflexes – not better than the wolves, but better than humans anyway – so the fact that she had fallen so easily meant something was up.

Jacob didn't care though. As soon as the leech's feet touched the ground, Jacob pounced on her and pinned her to the ground underneath his paws. She smiled at him. She didn't try to fight him, or escape. She didn't even hiss at him for capturing her; she just smiled. Jacob hated her for it.

You don't really hate me.

Fuck you. Get out of my head.

The leech reached up to stroke his face. I love you, she thought.

The last thought was too much for Jacob and he sank his teeth into the bloodsucker's neck and yanked his head back violently. He nudged the now severed head away from the body and began tearing the parasite limb from limb. With each bite, he felt the hatred for this creature pour through him like poison. When he was finished, Jacob phased back and collected all the body parts into one big pile and grabbed the book of matches from the pocket of his pants that he'd tied around his leg. He lit a match and threw it onto the ground, watching Bella's body go up in flames. Good riddance.

Jacob jerked awake from his nightmare, drenched in sweat and breathing heavily. He took a glance at his bedside table where the wedding invitation lay and felt the last piece of his heart break. He turned it over and grabbed a pen and wrote a messy letter to his father saying goodbye. Jacob jumped out of the window and burst into his wolf form, itching to get deep into the woods. He would stay like this as long as it was necessary. There was less of a chance he'd spend his life crying over what could have been if he was an animal.
