This was written for The Shoppe's Epistolary challenge. The challenge was to write a fic in the style of a letter, diary entry, article, or other stuff and put it to the theme 'The Little Things'. My little thing was building a lightsaber, which hasn't been elaborated on very much, I don't think. So without further ado, the fic:

The Jedi Times (By Jedi, for Jedi): Building a Lightsaber, by Anonymous Jedi

There comes a time in every Jedi's life where they graduate from a kiddie lightsaber to a real, big Jedi lightsaber. As you all know, a Jedi relies on his or her lightsaber for survival. I, an anonymous Jedi, definitely rely on my lightsaber to get me out of tough spots. But as most mature Jedi know, you don't choose the lightsaber, it chooses you. So to have the wrong lightsaber crystal is one of the worst mistakes to make. Here's how to pick the right lightsaber.

We all know how the crystal-to-lightsaber process works. Let's pick a random Jedi to be our test dummy. We'll name him Gilan. Why? Because Gilan's a cool name. Gilan has to go to Ilum, to start. Ilum, as we know, is a wasteland of snow and ice. You can get frostbite in a moment. However, it's filled with the largest and only deposit of force-sensitive crystals in the whole galaxy. The crystals, as us and Gilan know, are usually blue or green, but rare crystals can be of many colors.

As soon as Gilan enters the cave, he'll hear a voice, like we all did. The voice will call to him, like this:

"Gilan...Gilan..." calls the crystal, in a soft whisper. Gilan hears it, and perks up.

"Hello?" he calls out, thinking he's crazy. He's the only one in this cave, correct?

"Gilan...Come to me..." the crystal calls to him. Gilan looks around. He feels something.

"Who are you?"

"Find me..." the crystal whispers.

"Where are you?" Gilan calls out.

"Follow my voice..." the crystal instructs, and Gilan does what the crystal says. Eventually, he finds a section of the cave where the crystal's voice is loudest. Slowly, he steps forward, careful not to step on crystals, until he finds a crystal that's glowing brighter than all the others. As he reaches out to touch it, he finds out that it's shaking rapidly, and the Force energy is strongest around the crystal.

"You've found me..." the crystal tells him, and suddenly, it goes quiet. It stops shaking in an instant, and the energy around it has dimmed. That's how Gilan knows to pick it up. After a few pulls, the crystal comes free, and Gilan can set it on the ground.

At this point, Gilan takes off his pack, which is supposed to contain all the mechanical parts for building a lightsaber. And as it happened with us, the Force aids Gilan in his building of the lightsaber. Gilan just puts pieces together without thinking about it, because the Force guides his actions. Finally, the mechanical parts are complete, with only the crystal left. Slowly, Gilan lowers the crystal into its home inside the almost-finished lightsaber. With a little more Force guidance, Gilan is finally finished with his lightsaber.

Now, Gilan is ready to wield it. He twirls the lightsaber in his fingers a few times, and presses the button to ignite the lightsaber. A glowing beam of light is then shot outwards, a lightsaber. Suddenly, a happy Gilan decides to try out this new lightsaber, and tosses a couple of objects at the lightsaber. The lightsaber cleanly slices through them. And Gilan knows he has finished his lightsaber. His pride shows in his face, that he himself finished his own lightsaber.

I hope you enjoyed the fic. Yes, it was pretty short. I admit.
