chapter one—him
Jayfeather sees him everywhere.
When he wanders under the sky, the clouds follow him and they look like him.
The shadows formed by the leaves melt together to form a shape, and they look like him.
The pawprints when he walks through the forest after a rainfall, they look like him.
The ripples on the sparkling water expand, and they look like him.
The memories in his head. They look like him. A voice that tells the tomcat, he's still alive. Tomorrow, he'll be waiting, like always.
And he almost believes it for a second.
