A Brief Lapse

She drove like mad, unafraid of potential consequence. She pulled into a familiar garage. She didn't allow herself a moment to hesitate. She entered the small lobby and pressed the button for the elevator. As she rode to her desired floor, her eyes closed for a brief moment, taking a deep breath. The familiar hallway was revealed and she made her way to the desired door. She knocked.

The moment of no return came when the door opened.

"Kalinda?"

That voice held a growing power over her. She did not speak.

Her eyes locked on those of the beautiful lawyer. She took two steps forward; grasping silk-covered shoulders to guide them away from the door she then kicked shut. Turning a confused and stunned Alicia, Kalinda guided the woman back against the closed door.

She allowed her hands to gently trace the length of each arm from shoulder to wrist, her dark eyes never leaving the brunette's curious ones. Stilling the woman before her with a soft squeeze of each elbow, Kalinda pressed her body against Alicia's. Their size difference was of benefit when pressing together like this, neither woman battling for any particular angle.

There was a question in Kalinda's determined though considerate eyes. This was their truth. This would reveal what they both knew, the truth left unsaid.

Alicia nodded.

Kalinda pressed her lips against the waiting lips of her friend. It was their friendship that instilled in her the control to keep the kiss simple and gentle. She found her fingers tangling in Alicia's just as she broke the kiss.

Not realizing how tightly her eyes were closed, she opened them to find a wanton look directed at her. Alicia's hand grasped her hip, her mouth beckoning Kalinda's, this time with a force Kalinda's kiss had not allowed. This kiss was passionate. It was lust bridled only by the thought in the back of each of their minds that this was a line they shouldn't cross. There were so many reasons why they shouldn't yet as Alicia's tongue pressed past Kalinda's lips, the reasons slipped aside. Kalinda's hand traced the line from the hollow of Alicia's neck, along her jaw, by her ear and into her hair.

Teasing Alicia's bottom lip, Kalinda couldn't help herself and nibbled gently. The hand at her waist rewarded her by sliding to her ass. Her hips bucked involuntarily.

Reality came rushing back and Kalinda knew this had gone too far. She broke the kiss. Peeling away from the other woman, she allowed herself one last moment of closeness by resting her forehead against Alicia's.

They both fought to catch their breath and the remnants of self-control.

Alicia appeared terrified. Kalinda placed a kiss to the crown of her head and spoke the only words she'd uttered since arriving.

"It's okay," she whispered.

Pulling away from the incredibly desirable lawyer was nearly unbearable, but she knew it was the right thing to do. They could tempt the boundaries of friendship with innocent flirting but not this. No, this could spin out of control and would have with the slightest provocation.

Following Kalinda's lead, Alicia stepped away from the door. With but an extra inch of clearance the investigator opened the door and walked toward the hallway. She turned back, offering a genuine smile that only Kalinda was capable of.

In that smile was a promise. She might walk away from the moment they had shared, putting it out of her mind the best she could, but she'd never walk away from their friendship.
