Tom's Poem

Disclaimer and Authors Note; I've had this poem ever since I was in fifth grade, that's over four years ago, it always made me smile and I never think I will ever throw it out. Harry Potter belongs to J.K. Rowling and friends and this poem belongs to Barbara Hauck, age 13(at the time). I thank you both for your valuable things that you have donated to my life and the lives of countless others.

Tom Marvolo Riddle sat in the corner of the orphanage he lived at, why, why was he so different, a freak, an abomination against the Christian g-d. Tom curled up bringing his knees in closer to his body and crying into his knees as the young boy of nine tried to think of the only thing that made him smile. A poem written by his old best friend Barbara Hauck, she had died of an unknown disease last month, she had been his only friend, a freak like him but at least they had been together. Tom sniffled as he pulled out the worn paper from his pocket, of course he had copies, but this was the original. Tom dried his eyes with his sleeve as he read out the small poem allowing himself to become immersed in the perfect calligraphy of his best friend.

SMILE

She smiled at a sorrowful stranger.
The smile seemed to make him feel better.
He remembered past kindnesses of a friend
and wrote him a thank-you letter.
The friend was so pleased with the thank-you
that he left a large tip after lunch.
The waitress, surprised by the size of the tip,
bet the whole thing on a hunch.
The next day she picked up her winnings,
and gave part to a man on the street.
The man on the street was grateful;
For two days he'd had nothing to eat.
After he finished his dinner,
he left for his small dingy room.
(He didn't know at that moment
that he might be facing his doom.)
On the way he picked up a shivering puppy
and took him home to get warm.
The puppy was very grateful
to be in out of the storm.
That night the house caught on fire.
The puppy barked the alarm.
He barked 'til he woke the whole household
and saved everybody from harm.
One of the boys that he rescued
grew up to be President.
All this because of a simple smile
that hadn't cost a cent.

As he finished the small poem Tom gave a small smile he then folded the paper and put it back in his pocket. Tom's life soon changed he found out that he could speak to snakes and then that he was a wizard, and then of his heritage, and soon enough he became Lord Voldemort. But all through that gore and mayhem, all though that evil tirade of destruction he kept one thing with him at all times. That original copy of Smile, the only time he did not have it with him was when he went to the Potter's house and that lead to his doom. Lord Voldemort, for no more was he that young crying boy named Tom, but still a friend to Barbara Hauck, always friends with her. When Lord Voldemort was finally killed for good, Harry Potter was given first claim on searching his body for valuables. Harry took only one thing a small piece of paper with the words, 'my greatest treasure' written on the back and on the front a small poem, worn but preserved. A small poem called Smile, which Harry read before putting it in his pocket leaving the room with a tear in his eye and a smile on his face. Smile Lord Voldemort, I'll smile for you because you never could.

To All Those Who Needed A Smile But Will Never Have One, This One Was For You.

My Apologies to Barbara Hauck for making her/you dead, it just fit with the story, I hope that she/you live a prosperous life
