Rain pelted Katherine's window as she jotted down ideas for an upcoming story. She hadn't been able to get any good news since the strike. Her brows were furrowed in concentration as she hit the keys on her typewriter. She heard knocking at the fire escape. Standing out there, soaked to the bone, was none other than Jack Kelly. He waved at her. Katherine opened gaped in surprise, and ran to open the window to let him in.

"Hey, Ace." Jack said, smiling slightly. Katherine rolled her eyes.

"Jack Kelly! Its the middle of the night. What were you doing out there?" Jack's smile grew.

"Waitin for ya to come out and join me." Katherine raised an eyebrow.

"Where would we be going, exactly?"

"I dunno, just out for a walk."

"Its raining."

"That ain't ever stopped ya before." Katherine sighed.

"Alright," She said. "But we're getting you some dry clothes and a coat. I'm not going to hug someone soaking wet." Katherine opened her closet, shifting aside her work outfits. She pulled out a pair of pressed gray pants, a clean plaid shirt, and a long overcoat.

"Where'd ya get that?" Jack wondered aloud.

"I was planning on giving them to you for your next birthday." Katherine admitted. "But I guess now is as good as ever. The bathroom in down the hall. You can change in there." Jack left the room. Katherine sat back down on her bed staring at what she had written. She noticed how boring the idea was, and threw the paper in the trash can. Jack came back, drying his hair with a washcloth.

"You don't need to dry your hair if we're going back outside." Katherine pointed out. Jack sighed setting the towel at the foot of her bed. Katherine threw her coat over her clothes, and grabbed her umbrella. She climbed out the window with Jack close behind her.

The two walked under Katherine's umbrella. She felt warm with Jack standing next to her, despite the rain still hitting them both. Jack opened his mouth to say something, but it died in his throat.

"What?" Katherine asked. Jack shook his head.

"Nothing. Nevermind." He said, his shoulders slumping. Katherine knew there was something, but she didn't push him. They ended up at the lodging house. Jack climbed up the ladder to his penthouse, and motioned for Katherine to follow. The rain was slowly coming to a stop.

"Jack? Why are we here?" Jack grinned sheepishly.

"This was where we had our first kiss." He said. "Remember?" Katherine would never forget. They were alone and arguing, then out of the blue, Katherine kissed him.

"Of course I remember." She said.

"Good." Jack took something out of his pocket. "Then it'll make this even better." He got down on one knee. Katherine gasped. "Katherine Elizabeth Pulitzer. If it wasn't for you, I would be in Santa Fe, alone. But you gave me something to believe in. And don't ever wanna stop believing in you. Will you marry me?" Tears brimmed Katherine's eyes. She couldn't get a word out.

"Yes." She whispered, nodding vigorously. "Yes!" Jack slipped a ring on her finger. It wasn't much, just a gold ring with a small diamond, but it meant everything to her. Katherine threw her arms around Jack, crying happily. She heard whistling. Standing at the foot of the ladder were Crutchie, Specs, Romeo, and Race. Race was the one whistling.

"Hey Jackie!" He called up. "Did she say yes?" Jack and Katherine climbed back down the ladder. She showed the ring to the boys. Jack kept his arm around her.

"For sure?" Jack asked, making sure Katherine wasn't going to back down.

"For sure." She confirmed, filling the space between her and her new fiancé with a kiss.
